I just learned about MEFO bills as part of my German class's WW2 day. I wanted to learn more about them and acquire one myself for my collection.

@jas, using the search box with the keyword MEFO and then METALLURGISCHE, I'm not getting any hits to previous CCF threads. I do note that there is a running thread of notgeld, which of course is not exactly what you are looking for. However, you might reach out to the folks posting those notes to see if they have any sources of MEFO notes that they would share with you. Here is that link:

I haven't heard of them before now. I just ran a search, and even just finding a picture of one is next-to-impossible; most of the images of notes that come up in the search are actually pictures of hyperinflationary notes or regular Nazi Reichsbank notes, not MEFO bills. My German is rusty, but my Google translation of This website is that they seem to have a picture of a blank (unissued) MEFO bill, as well as front and back of an issued MEFO - they don't look like much, rather more like bank cheques than regular paper money.

Those two notes on that one website were the only two examples I could find, compared to thousands of examples of regular Nazi-era reichsmark notes. Given the lack of images of these notes online, it would seem most of them did not survive the war. I have no idea what the market value of such items would be.

Great reply & link @Sap. From this source they look to be nothing more than cheques. I would consider this area something a specialist should persue (not somebody just getting into the hobby).

I may be wrong about these MEFO notes BUT I would exercise a great deal of caution/skepticism when looking into purchasing WW2 era German banknotes. Unfortunately, the whole fascination with this ugly chapter of history has produced a plethora of fake, doctored notes marketed to the morbid collector who's fascination may throw caution out the door.

Please check this thread where unsavoury sellers have defaced genuine reichsmarks with contemporary (home made) stamps:

NOTE: such notes will be worth LESS than the original (unmarked) item.
