Congratulations on your Good to have you here with us.

This is a contest that takes a large cent specialist to play with accuracy. We can however speculate based on general knowledge:

I guess it was stuck over a foreign denomination of similar size and composition that was circulating in the US at the time.

It could also have been a predecessor Colonial copper like the Massachusetts or Connecticut coins that appear here on occasion. That is more likely.

The size of the underlying ONE suggests a counterfeit struck over a braided hair large cent.

I wrote articles on it in both EAC's PW and Coin Week; XRF testing compared to a genuine mint product, which the over struck 1796 is certainly not!

Incredible story, and as was commented in your Coin Week article, how could this have been certified with the clear star in front of Liberty's face?!? Not to mention the fairly obvious "ONE CENT" in a different type face on the reverse.
