hopefully someone can educate me (being new to this) why 1960, 1970 and 1982 pennies have small dates and large dates? Are small dates worth anything more than the large date pennies? I can't seem to find in numismedia.com answer to this question. thanks everyone in advance for any information so I can understand what to do with the small date pennies...........

1960 P small date has some small value, 1970-s small date has value, and the 1982 only has value if it's a copper 82-D SD. The 1974 small and large dates are irrelevant.

The small date and large date varieties were produced with different dies. In 1960, this occurred because the mint became concerned that the small zero in 1960 would result in die breaks and a filled in zero, so they revised the die a little, enlarging the zero and six as well as a few other small changes to the coin, thinking no one would notice. Wrong! I am not sure of the reason for some of the others and whether it was a similar situation or not.

1960 Small and large dates:

What to look for on the small dates:

1970 Small and large dates:

Differences between the two:

How to check for the differences on your monitor?

Different mintmark locations to show that there is just not one die that was affected?

All of these are small dates:
Why are only small dates San Francisco cents affected?

Because the small date die were from a different master die created that year.

1974 Small and large dates:

1982 Large and small dates:

Note just the dates that are affected:

Note how the devices on the small date are compared with the large dates.

No small date Copper Denver cents were scheduled.
