My condolences to the shop owner. This must be a very difficult time both financially and emotionally. Cutting a hole in the roof to bypass the security system seems to be the choice way in these days for the criminal element getting into stores. Why haven't security providers and coin dealers bolstered protections to eliminate this line of attack? |

Security is out there already, unfortunately people haven't become that aware there is a need for it, they think they ARE well protected already just have latch alarms and glass break sensors. How about infrared motion detectors and vibration sensors? I put those in Pawn Shops in the early 1990's while installing security systems. With the rush for DIY security setups, no longer do homeowners or business operations have a "Security Assessment" to determine exactly what hardware may be needed to secure the interior as well as the perimeter. Thieves scope out places where like this business, the interior and goods within are completely uncovered by any electronical means. They now can tell if there are WiFi devices in use to cover the safe, display cases, etc. If they sense any...you are fairly sure you WON"T get robbed. These devices cost very little to the total cost of a security system, and most insurance companies give a drastic reduction in premiums! Just think if a couple of Doberman's were left inside as sentrys...  staff edit - removed political rantEdited by Crazyb0

This crap of breaking in on weekends, especially long Holiday weekends, has been going on for a long time here in Texas.
One group of thieves were caught a few years ago, I believe in Houston, and it stopped for a while. Looks like they are may be picking up where they left off. Same MO anyway.

Very sad to see that thieves would try stealing 50k from an old man. However that is a very classic MO what thieves do is they first test sercuity and response time from a minor break in to see if they get detected, often taking nothing or just a few things. They then lay low for a couple of years 1-3 yrs case the place again to see if sercuity has been beefed up and try to break in. Hope I'm not teaching you old gezzer how to steal :0.

What is scary is that some bank's safe deposit room SEEM to have little to no security measures in place. I used a bank in Texas once in that their safe deposit box room did no appear to have any security measures, at least any visible ones other than the steel door, which often was left open and unlocked during business hours. The bank itself was just a converted house. Just goes to show you the difference in countries as well as far as security is concerned. In the Philippines, which I visit sometimes, there is almost always a security guard with the smallest of businesses, heck, taco stands there have armed security guards equipped with automatic rifles.
