I saw this one at auction and decided I "needed" it for my own. The vast majority of split planchet errors I have ever seen are split between obverse and reverse leaving a slimmed down coin. This one definitely doesn't follow that trend. Here are the pictures. Now I need to find the missing piece

Interesting coin. I don't believe I've seen one of these either.

I feel like someone who collects errors might pay quite a bit for that.

I find it strange that, where the break occured, the edge is rounded off by wear. I would suspect that such a coin in this condition, would not circulate, and thus would not wear at the break.

Davec13, what do you see on the edge of the break? I may be incorrect in my assessment.

ALWAYS question the authenticity of slabbed coins, especially errors. The TPGs (NGC & PCGS included) often label errors incorrectly and have slabbed fakes.

I thought the same thing about the wear. However if you look at the reverse the split is fairly straight, on the obverse it's pretty "bumpy" looking. It's kind of hard to see the actual edge being in the slab though. I am tempted to break it out and look at the edge under magnification.
Rest in Peace

Could it be we put too much trust in TPG'ers ?

This remind me of the split Morgan dollar I seen elsewhere. It did be hard to dissect coins for change, like they used to dissect stamps for mail. My 2 cents plus half. LOL!

Ah, I think you're thinking of Northern Nevada Coin's 'Broken CC.'
