Once per month, I stop into my credit union and drop ten bucks to purchase rolls to hunt through for the purpose of filling a set of Harris folders from circulation. These folders are intended to eventually go to whatever grandkid might cultivate an interest in coin collecting.
This month it was
Jefferson nickels.
The highlights of this search consisted of 5 pre-1960 nickels, the earliest being a 1941. No Buffs or
War Nickels to be found.
The most shining star, however, was a BU1946-D. On closer scrutiny, I found that it was a very splendid example, with virtually
zero naked eye visible scratches or nicks! Examining the piece under a microscope at 25X, I found a few scratches and rim dings that were so tiny as to be of very minor significance. The coin has full mint luster, a great strike, and only a small portion missing on the center of the lowest step on Monticello.
Beautiful coin!
I would give it an easy 'Gem BU'. How it got mixed into a Loomis roll with the usual fare of circulated nickels I can't even begin to guess. Spent from someone's collection, perhaps? Needless to say, this coin went into my own collection, as it is far superior to the 46' D I already owned.
Sorry I can't post a pic. I don't have a quality camera, and any images I attempted to make with my cel phone didn't really do justice to the coin.
The rest of the lot was fairly decent, with not too many heavily scratched coins. Many went into the grandkiddo's Harris folders. There was a good mix of P/D. The latest date found was 2022, indicating that these rolls had been hanging around the credit union for a couple of years. A little disappointing on that point, as I had hoped to land a 2024 or two, a date for which I have yet to find a specimen for my own collection.
No 2009s either. Maybe next time....
