American mint send me a voucher for a 2015 high relief american gold liberty proof. The question is, is the american mint trying to be part of the us mint, is it not good to purchase anything from a company as this. Sorry for being slow. Thanks in advance.

The American Mint is not affiliated with the US Mint - it is a private company.
Purchases from American Mint have to be considered on a case-by-case basis, but they are often priced beyond their true value. Can you share a picture of what is being offered?

From your description, I'm guessing this is the coin in question: https://www.americanmint.com/2015-h...r=US_1734100It's a reproduction and gold-plated copper. I wouldn't think this is worth having, even if free (unless you really want it, but it will have virtually no resale value).

There's always a catch - that "free" coin can be yours if you just pay their shipping and handling fees.

Quote: The question is, is the american mint trying to be part of the us mint... They are a private company so of course cannot actually "become part of the US Mint", and have no legal basis for any such claim. However, the word "Mint" is not legally protected; a company calling itself a "mint" is not legally obligated to actually own a factory where they make coins. Anyone can set up their own marketing company, call themselves a "mint", and start selling cheap made-in-China products. They are, however, hoping to sow doubt and confusion as to whether or not they are in fact "the real US mint", without ever having to actually put a "we're not the government" disclaimer on their website. If my experience is anything to go by, such "free" or "cheap" coins given away by private corporations pretending to be "mints" always have a catch, and the catch is that buried in the fine print, you are agreeing to have your name added to a mailing list where they send you even more "coins" after that first one, and those additional coins are going to be at elevated prices, and they keep charging your credit card for all these coins you don't want, and for you, sending the coins back and getting your name taken off the marketing list are easier said than done. The target market for such marketing tricks are the people who are too timid to complain and ask for their money back. Their target market is also not actual coin collectors, since most coin collectors would know that the "American mint" is not the actual US government mint and that their "coins" are all heavily overpriced gimmicks. Their target market are the dabblers, the casual speculators, and the friends and relatives of coin collectors who never know what to get them for birthdays/Christmas.
