Japan has issued new banknotes this month. The last time Japan replaced it's banknotes was 20 years ago.
Some key notes:
- New anti counterfeit feature with hologram portrait. World's first? - Japan banknotes are not made out of cotton as it uses a combination of various plant fiber. - The fiber combination alone makes this unique from the rest of the world. - Raw material (paperbush shrub) sourced from Nepal (!)
Many Japanese business places will have to re-calibrate their vending machines to accept the new banknotes as well as the new 500 yen coin which was issued in 2021. Understandably many aren't too happy with as this is an added cost to their business, as they are still trying to recover from the pandemic.

No. Holograms are becoming rather common these days. For example: The new English £50 note has a hologram, the 1000 and 10000 Colones banknotes from Costa Rica, ectr. I don't know who was the first though.
Quote: hologram with a person's portrait? I would like to know what other examples are out there.
Bank of Canada issued notes with holographic strips of their PM's from 2011-2013. The Frontiers series has all the past PM's & QEII featured (twice- once in 2012 & then 2015 for a commemorative $20).
I'm sure there are many other countries who have implemented similar design features. (I'm just not sure who as I don't actively seek polymer/look for notes due to their holo security features, etc).
The portrait security strip of the Canadian poly notes uses Kurz Kinnegram tech which they say is not a hologram which is open source tech and theirs is a secert sauce of ink refractions ect. Are the new Bank of Japan notes poly? looks like it is paper
