Picked this up at auction the other day. Fairly certain it is an 0-116.

thats one crazy coin. look at that strike! large die crack the double letters and whats going on with the date digits? pretty cool

the big TPG's have problems grading these and are at best inconsistent. I learned my lesson with these. typically I would look at the best defined areas to determine the grade. for me i'd call this a mid-VF coin. from what I've seen the big houses would probably call it F12

Would you pay mid-VF money for it?

I'll go with F-12. Certain parts look VG and others VF, but such is grading Bust Half Dollars.

No doubt, one of the reasons I pulled the trigger. Paid G-level price for it and feel I did fairly well. Possibly cleaned in its past.

This is a tough coin to grade. To say wear is uneven would be an understatement. It strikes me funny that the lines in the shield are still there. I'll go F-15. I'm assuming it's the pointed 6, stem through claw variety.

Yes, pointed with stem. I've matched to O-116 https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...6-stem/39319

Shield lines are not an anomaly. If you look at all graded coins - even the 8's and 10's - they all have well-defined lines. Area must be a slightly concave, can't visually tell tho.

No, just pointing out their inconsistencies with grading the series and that I've learned to drop the grade on these 2 grade levels and even 3 with a coin that looks like this. discerning wear from strike when you have something like this can be a headache

Thx all. Was contemplating having it graded however it would only make $ sense if concensus grade was F12 or higher. Sounds like VG is most likely so I'll just capsule raw.

I 'd say VG cleaned. I do agree with panzaldi that TPGs are no better than us at these.

Fine 12 or 15, I would personally go with 12 as a net for the cleaning.

Tough one because it is extremely flat strike meaning the lack of detail in the middle is mostly strike not wear. I'll say VF-20.

While I do lean towards this being cleaned at some point in its past, no one has called it a DETAILS coin.

I do realize this is a tough one to grade.
