Is It 1858 Or Is It An 1838 1/2 Penny

I purchased this as an 1858 1/2 penny but after looking at the date I am inclined to think it is an 1838. Thoughts?

the 5 looks a little smushed, but definitely 1858

Looks like an 1838 to me.

As Wade says it is 1858, the 5 being defective. A 3, as seen on an 1838, is a different shape (see below).

Tough call, but 1858 is probably correct.

100% 1858, just compare the center "point" on the OP's coin with the 1838 example

Ok, I see the 1858. But it seems like there is an awful lot of flatting on the date compared to the rest of the field. Yes it is what VG at best! Also, what is on the bottom of the one. I am not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill, just trying to understand how this got smushed and not the rest of the field.

The die is damaged/chipped around the 5 punch resulting in extra relief metal when struck.
