I sent in a submission to ANACS and it was delivered on the 11th of April and I was billed by ANACS on the 26th of April and I haven't heard anything from ANACS since. I sent them a potentially really obscure Japanese coin, so I am aware that it might take a while but when should I consider contacting them about this submission? Below is the coin that I sent in.

I would contact them now. It's been almost 6 weeks since they received it.

I assume you paid $39 (+S&H) for grading this coin? Good luck!

The grading industry is being (has been) swamped. PCGS is still looking to hire graders. Anyone interested?

https://www.PCGS.com/job/grader

"PCGS is looking for experienced, highly skilled graders. We need both U.S. and World graders.

We need both graders who want to work in California at PCGS and/or graders who would enjoy traveling to shows to grade coins in the United States and/or Asia and Europe. If you love coins, it's an exciting opportunity for you and one of the plum jobs in the coin industry."

Is that a Chinese cash coin?

I'm sure ANACS sent you a form indicating they received your coin with some sort of job number on it.
Go to the ANACS site, look up that number and see what info you get.

Status update: So, I was able to view my current order status on the ANACS website and it just says that it was expected to ship on May 23 and is currently in the "Consultant" category/stage. It seems that ANACS is working on it, so I am just going to let this one ride for a while longer.

the consultant stage may be their form of quality assurance checks to verify the grade given. sometimes it takes a while - especially with obscure coins.

Status update: Finally decided to contact anacs today and they are still working on it, which I am fine with since it is a potentially very obscure item and anacs customer service reflected that sentiment by saying "Due to the nature of the coin in question we cannot guarantee a turn-around time.".

Currently, I am still waiting on ANACS to get back to me and it is still listed as at the Consultant... I'm not willing to push it on this one since there is no other TPG that I can send a "cast" coin too and since I have nothing to lose but everything to gain by waiting it out, I am just waiting it out. If I push ANACS and they give up and just send this item back to me, it becomes an interesting curiosity but if I let it ride and they end up certifying it, it becomes a potentially interesting and valuable historical artifact. So, I'm letting this one ride...

Dang buddy, you're just flat out getting taken advantage of.

I wouldn't be this nice, and I would call directly to get this sorted out one way or another.

Update: I just took a look at the order status on the ANACS website and it is now listed as "Processing" instead of "Consultant". I don't know if that is good, bad or neutral but it appears to be a step in a direction forward.

At least it's making progress and is not in some black hole somewhere.

There's no reason not to contact them about it. Their customer service has always gotten back to me within a few hours via email. They can see things in their internal system that you can't. You won't push them into giving up just by asking about it.

Update: I don't have it in hand yet but I got the results posted by ANACS and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed in ANACS on this one. According to ANACS my silver in color/tone Japanese coin is just the normal copper variety, which makes very little sense to me. I'm going to wait to get this back in hand, take some photos/compile some research and contact ANACS customer service about this to try to get a better explanation as to how they came to this conclusion, which honestly seems rather impossible to me. They held on to this coin for nearly ten months and it would appear that ANACS didn't even try to find an answer. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Results below:
Date:
1863-1867
Denomination:
4 Mon
Variety:
Japan
Label:
AE 4 MON, KM-6
Grade:
50
Comments:
Consultant says this is the common type.
