Hello,
I purchased this 1882-1883 Korean 3 Chon recently and it was listed as an "old counterfeit" but I am not totally convinced that this item is actually a counterfeit and I think that it may be just a poorly cast original example. Anyone have any thoughts? Please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.
I started building my circulating coins/tokens materials set quite a while ago now and the fact of the matter is that there are only so many metals/materials that were ever used in circulating coins and tokens throughout world history but every once in a while, I still take a look around on the internet to see if I can find any metals/materials that I missed and as luck would have it, I was able to acquire a new one recently. Below is a Lumber token from around 1930 Texas made of stitched, lacquered "Rawhide".

I haven't added anything to my circulating coins/tokens materials set in a while or posted in a while but I was able to acquire something that I was looking for recently, it is an 1882-1883 silver Chon from Korea with a black enamel seal. I personally like this example in particular since it has a counterstamp/countermark, which tells me that this particular example likely actually circulated as currency around the time of production unlike many other examples of this series since at the time of production in Korea the silver Chon series of coins were the first and only silver coins in production in Korea, so, they ended up being hoarded quite a bit by the upper class at the time of production and thus didn't circulate as much as intended and production was abandoned after only a short production run.

When Should I Contact ANACS About A Submission?

Update: I got the item back in hand today and I think that I have firmly decided that I am done with ANACS as an institution. They bent the coin getting into the slab. I know they bent it that way since they gave the coin a straight grade of AU50. This further indicates that coin is made of tin since tin is half the hardness of copper. I am honestly to angry to deal with this right now. So, I will post photos later. |

Update: I don't have it in hand yet but I got the results posted by ANACS and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed in ANACS on this one. According to ANACS my silver in color/tone Japanese coin is just the normal copper variety, which makes very little sense to me. I'm going to wait to get this back in hand, take some photos/compile some research and contact ANACS customer service about this to try to get a better explanation as to how they came to this conclusion, which honestly seems rather impossible to me. They held on to this coin for nearly ten months and it would appear that ANACS didn't even try to find an answer. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?
Results below: Date: 1863-1867 Denomination: 4 Mon Variety: Japan Label: AE 4 MON, KM-6 Grade: 50 Comments: Consultant says this is the common type. |

Currently, I am still waiting on ANACS to get back to me and it is still listed as at the Consultant... I'm not willing to push it on this one since there is no other TPG that I can send a "cast" coin too and since I have nothing to lose but everything to gain by waiting it out, I am just waiting it out. If I push ANACS and they give up and just send this item back to me, it becomes an interesting curiosity but if I let it ride and they end up certifying it, it becomes a potentially interesting and valuable historical artifact. So, I'm letting this one ride... |

Hello,
I was able to acquire a Boyd's Battery recently and it is pretty dirty/grody and I was wondering if anyone here knows how to go about safely cleaning it without damaging it. The reason that I want to clean it is to see if it actually works. Not in the sense of what they were originally advertised to do in a quackery sense but in the sense that does it actually produce an electrical charge from nothing more than human sweat.
Boyd's Battery was invented as a quackery cure all in the 1870's when electricity was all the rage in regards to medicine. It supposedly works on galvanic corrosion principals and can produce an electrical charge with no moving parts with nothing more than coming into contact with human sweat. It was a pendent that when worn would cause the skin around it to tingle as the electrolytes in sweat came into contact with it producing a mild electrical charge. I am curious if this is actually the case in reality.
Picture of the item in question below, any thoughts or advice would be helpful. Thanks.

There is only a small hand full of various coins that I have been looking to acquire for quite a while. One of these was an Irish silver penny that was struck at King John's Castle when it was being built in Limerick Ireland at the mint inside of the castle. King John's Castle is one of the most well preserved mid-evil castles in Europe. I visited that castle with a friend while in Ireland in 2015 and stood in the castle mint that had been there more or less unchanged since the castle was built over 800 years ago. There are very few places in the world where you can do something like that and since then I have always wanted a coin minted at that mint and I was able to acquire the below example recently. I am still waiting for it in hand but I'm excited. This one makes a cool story and is a good conversation piece in my opinion.

Got An Apology From Ebay For Them Over Stepping On Tax Data.

This is going to be kind of a rant but to be on honest this is the kind of thing that I was worried about when the laws changed. I got a 1099K from eBay today for last years taxes and the problem with this is that they were not supposed to send me 1099K for last years' taxes. The new threshold for a 1099K in regards to the new laws did not go into effect until January first of this year. This doesn't matter to me from a financial standpoint since I was planning on declaring this income anyway but the problem that I have with all of this is that eBay is flying fast and loose with my personal financial data and then acts like it's not a big deal. Anyone else get a 1099K from eBay when they weren't supposed too? |
