Hi all, Received this today. Really happy with it to be honest. Obverse is much better than reverse, reverse has very small wear. I've compared it to AU58s and it is surely higher as the detail on the dragons scales and specifically the dragons tail end are excellent. Weight is 26.95g Does it make MS60 or higher? Thanks everyone. To be honest I overpaid at £140. It looked to be a higher grade, but AU58 isn't too bad, and I'll keep it as my first Japanese Yen from the period.

It is still a beautiful coin! Sometimes it seems like a slippery slope from 58-61. You can still enjoy the sharp details of the design on this gorgeous coin!

Very nice! Glad to hear it turned out well! Was a little higher than I expected but I'm not overly familiar with this series. Attractive coin for sure!

AU-58 seems correct as there are signs of some circulation.

The key wear points I look for on 1 Yen are:
- On the top leaf at 5 o'clock on the reverse, near the ribbon. This is the first area that wears on the reverse.
- Where the dragon hair meets the scales (at around 4 o'clock on your photo) on the obverse. The bottom 4 hairs are worn, and this indicates an AU mid/high 50s.
These don't always wear the same on both sides, so you need to check both.

TobyJ, I live in Japan, and always looking for Meiji/Taisho 1 yen. I've noticed recently, that they've been going up in price after dropping in mid 2020 (I assume that nobody was buying coins back then). Since then, they seem to have gone up by maybe 50% for comparable coins. I've also noticed a few Japanese sellers getting them certified slabbed, and attempting to sell for absurd prices on ebay. e.g. Cleaned AU details certified slabbed for ~$800 to $1200. I'm hoping that the price rises are due to the Olympics, but will come down again. Edited by Dnas

I noticed this too, the prices have gone up before the olympics however, but they will have had an effect no doubt. I've got notifications on ebay but they all seem to be coming up as details, however there was a nice MS63+ which just sold but I couldn't currently afford it as I am moving house. |
