Perth Mint - The term 'Starfleet Command' was first used in Court Martial, an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series which went to air in 1967.

Even though it is a remote organisation, largely isolated from the main characters, it exerts an enormous influence over the entire Star Trek storyline.

If you're a Star Trek fan but have been asking yourself what, exactly, is Starfleet Command, then here's the gist.

In the Star Trek universe, the United Federation of Planets is an interstellar alliance composed of semi-autonomous planetary governments existing under a central ruling constitution, based on the principles of universal liberty and equality. Commonly referred to as the Federation, it conducts missions in deep space exploration, research, defence and diplomacy. As one of the most powerful states in known space, it is the governing institution of a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada known as the Starfleet.

Starfleet Command operates its fleet of star ships and star bases around which the Star Trek stories revolve. Headquartered in San Francisco on Earth, Starfleet Command's personnel consist of hundreds of different species, representing the Federation's diversity.

Its protocols, referred to as General Orders and Regulations, are the fundamental principles by which Starfleet and its officers carry out their duties. Its most important ethical philosophy, the Prime Directive, prohibits members from interfering with the internal and natural development of alien civilisations - a focus for several episodes during the show's 53-year (and continuing) run.

Regular viewers would immediately recognise the Starfleet Command insignia - a circular emblem featuring a central arrowhead symbol, known as the 'delta' or 'delta shield', which incorporates the depiction of a central five-pointed star.

2019 3oz Silver Holey Collar & Delta Coin Set

Struck from 3oz of pure silver in the form of two separate legal tender issues, this numismatic representation of the iconic motif is the latest addition to the official CBS Star Trek coin program produced under licence by The Perth Mint.

Beautifully crafted, it has a strict limited mintage of just 1,701, a recognisably significant number for many Star Trek fans who would undoubtedly be excited to add this remarkable piece of memorabilia to their collection.

I was like, "I want this!"

Until I saw the price. I like it, but not that much.
