since teenager years. looking to get more serious about it in my twilight years, still working full time, so don't get much time at it right now. US coins only. Question for anyone: I have full rolls of pennies, still in bank wrappers. 1958D, 1959D and 1961D, obtained from banks in those years. Never been out of bank wrappers. Are they more valuable to leave in wrappers, or split apart? Let me know. thank you!!

and good question, my thought is, what if half or a third of each roll contained BU DDO / DDR,rpms or high grade cents or error varieties...how would you know...then again if they are all normal cents, how much could you get off eBay(un-opened)for each from an auction? Also depends on how and where they were stored for all those years... If they were in my hands I would have to check them all out....good luck

to CCF. I would search the rolls,errors-varieties-high grade. John1
( I'm no pro, it's just my humble opinion ) Searched 6.5 +/- Million Cents Since 1971

From a pure money standpoint it's a double edged sword. Potentially there could be something in there worth far more than the roll, but if there isn't the roll is most likely going to sell for more than the coins

If all you are concerned about is the market vale of the coins, it will depend on your tolerance for risk.
A bank wrapped roll of BU cents from back then has a set value. But if you like to gamble, you could break them open and look for varieties, errors, etc.
Bird in the hand scenario. Maybe open half of them. Would provide you with many hours of fun filled enjoyment.

Keep them as they've been for all those decades.
They would garner considerable interest just as they are.

Farm, it depends on where you want to go with your coins. If you are looking at them as an investment that you'll soon be cashing in, then I'd keep them as rolls. If you're interested in building a coin collection, break those rolls open! I think there are a lot of us here that enjoy the hunt of searching through rolls, and would love to have the opportunity you have. Opening them and searching for errors and varieties can be fun and a great way to dive deeper and really learn about particular coins at the same time. Learning what exactly to look for by going through multiples of the same date is fun, but tedious as well. Searching for gems is something that all coin collectors live for, but it requires some effort. Good luck in whatever you decide! and to CCF!

thanks everyone for the responses. good advice. My approach based on your experience and recommendations will be to break apart the rolls and search through the coins for errors and any other "surprises."
