I have been collecting for just a little over 3 years now. I'm a HUUUGE Morgan silver dollar collector. I have somewhere over 200 morgans with 6 being CC. I just recently purchased my first couple of GSA's, not knowing a lot about their history I started doing some research, that's when I read that GSA's were not just CC they had others like the seated liberty and Peace dollars. While reading that uncirculated were put in holders andcirculated was put in soft covers MY HEART slipped a beat and my thoughts went back to a couple of years ago when I was given a Peace dollar that at the time I thought was from some place like the Bradford Exchange. So I jumped up and basically ran to my safe, from there I spent the next week trying to find this specific 1922 Peace dollar that I have. After many hours of frustration I finally found a picture like mine on the Wortpoint website but didn't want to pay the sub fee to see what it sold for yet. So.... that is why I am here tonight. The first couple of pics are of mine, then I included the pics that I found on the Worthpoint web site. I want to get some thoughts from someone who is familiar with the non CC GSA coins. Thanks, Tammy

To start, how about some correctly oriented close-ups? How do you expect people to view your pictures sideways?

I tried, but I am using my phone. They were right side up when I took them but this is how it loaded them. So after 4 or 5 tried to crop and rotate I gave up....

First: to CCF!

I love Morgans too.

It's not a GSA holder, but a Capitol Plastics holder. Capitol has been making plastic coin holders for many, many years. Even though it says "United States Government" on the insert, this holder was neither issued by nor associated with the government nor the GSA hoard sale. Peace dollars -- of which there were a relatively small amount -- in the GSA hoard were almost all released as "soft-packs" with the coin and a plastic GSA token, offered at a starting bid of $3 during the sale. Some Uncirculated Peace dollars DID manage to sneak into "circulated" GSA soft packs. A small fraction of non-CC Morgans made it into the black "hard pack" GSA cases but I have yet to see one with a Peace dollar.

Your holder appears to have a 1922 Peace dollar in it with some nice reverse rim toning, although I can't tell if it's circulated or not. Either which way, the holder adds no premium, so you'd value it based on the grade of the coin inside the holder, probably anywhere between melt value to $20 to $40 or more depending on grade and any problems such as cleaning/damage. This particular holder looks similar to the ones used by the Franklin Mint for some of their products in the 70s.

If you spend some time here on these forums you'll find a lot of friendly and helpful folks who have knowledge of a great many coin series, not just Morgans, and we love it when you show us your coins, so please feel free to share!

Pretty for sure .

Lots on Obverse chatter indicated light circulation but I can't tell if those scratches are on coin or holder. Strong MS-64 to 65 I think. Maybe $70 on a good day.

Its definiately the holder, its scratched all to heck lol. She has a very nice frosty luster. There are a couple of nicks on her cheek but other than that she is Beautiful. The reverse has a nice purple/maroon toning but is definitely weaker struck. Thought about taking her out of the holder and putting her in a air tight round plastic holder what you think?

There were relatively few Peace dollars in the GSA hoard sold in 1972 and later and to the best of my knowledge ALL of them were in GSA soft packs. If a Peace dollar in a GSA Uncirculated hard pack holder ever did turn up it would probably be worth a bundle. Four figures at least. You mentioned Seated dollars. There was exactly 1 Seated dollar in the GSA sales, a G-4 1864 dollar. It sold in a soft pack in the mixed circulated category for $3 and is still in the government holder (Now slabbed by NGC) I believe the last time it sold it went for over $7K.

There were other Seated dollars that came out of the vaults back in the 1960's when the government was redeeming silver certificates with silver dollars. Some circulated, but at least three bags of mint state 1859 O and 1860 O dollars came out of the stockpile and were exchanged at face value.

Thanks for the corrected photos. I lean toward 63, but it's an attractive example whatever the grade.

A dealer in Florida has a 1872 Seated Liberty GSA soft pack (NGC F 15) that turned up. It's listed at $16,500

I have seen listings of the GSA hoard but I don't recall anything listing any Peace dollars.
