When I was a boy growing up in SmallTown, Tx we had a Hobby-Day once a year at our little school starting in the 3rd grade. While most of the kids brought in their baseball/football sport cards, GI-Joes, Dolls, Books, HW & MatchBox Toy Cars, hunting trophies & yes UNLOADED GUNS and even a horse or two!!, etc., I brought in my little coin-collection. LOL, the BIG NERD association was with me for the next nine years of school. Have any of you been associated with the Poindexter aspect of the hobby?

To this day when I go back home (Centerville, Tx -- POP 988) to visit I wear that NERD reputation with pride when I often see old friends.

Take Care

I came from tuning and racing cars to coins, so I get a little crap now and then.
All I have to ask is "how much will your car be worth in 3 years ?"

I am just a nerd, plain and simple, although I prefer the term "geek" myself.

I remember in grade six giving a speech on the "US Monetary System" including information on the US Mint and the Federal Reserve. No one got it or me.

Nope. Wouldn't consider myself a nerd ... big sports enthusiast (play, coach, and watch), hunt, fish, outdoorsy, low-down biker dude. I've always been that way (except the Harley ... just dreamed of one when I was a kid). But coins were always a passion. I never associated coins with nerd-dom. Do you have a complex Ben?

LOL, no not at all. Just went to rural Texas school at a place and time (60s and 70s) that money was tight and for spending not collecting.

Suppose, I'm much like you -- retired after 21 yrs in the service, always active in sports even into college, (Track and Football) and love riding my 04 FXDWG with the Patriot Guard Riders and a couple of other clubs when I can.

Never-the-less at the time I was labeled a nerd and not very interesting when compared to the kids who brought in their horse or dirtbike per-se.

I mean coin collectors don't dress up like their favorite coin when they go to shows do they? Or have wedding ceremonies, while in costume with all the other Mandalorian (think Boba Fett from Starwars) costumed attendants all at a coin show, do they?

While coin collecting can toe the perverbial line, it is light years from true nerddom. Just check out some pics from this years Comic Con, and you will see what I mean. Don't get me wrong, by no means am I judging, I just think that coin collectors are based slightly more in reality, even if it is a silver reality from 100 yrs ago with a deep cameo of Lady Liberty on it.

Edit
PS. Kids are always brutal to anyone who is not the same as they are. If you notice though, it is often the 'nerd' that comes back to the reunions with a hot wife, and a nice car.

No Nerd here. Where I grew up it was not smart to mention you had anything of value of any kind at home. Therefore I never mentioned collecting coins or anything. One really good friend used to like to brag about having coins. They were all stolen.
No Nerd here, just a great secret keeper.

G'day,
I recently saw a quote from Bill GATES, directed to a group of children on the verge of finishing school. He included the advice:
"learn to be nice to nerds: chances are, you'll end up employed by one."
Peter

Rest in Peace

Certainly no nerd here. I was also more of the biker type most of my life. After reading this I'm wondering if there is a connection to bikers and coins! My only problem now is I wish I would not lived as hard as I did the first 45 years or so. I'm paying for it big time now.(I don't think I would change a thing though as I had a blast living it) At least now, all crippled up, I still collect and enjoy my coinsMike

NO NERD here either... I never told anyone about my coins at home. My uncle got me into coins. I'm still collecting, now it is currency though, but still have the original penny collection he helped me start.

My uncle? He owns one of the best coin shops in Dallas TX.

Never was a nerd........though at times, I suppose, I traveled back and forth !
I always tried to be friends with everyone......went to a very small school, (39 people in our Senior Class) so it was easy.
I was always into sports...played sports throughout all years of school.....still watch......hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, Rendezvous, target shooting, very outdoorsy....
..And have a good friend who's a biker from a "biker family" and used to go to a lot of rallies and biker events with them !!....

I'm a nerd in my own opinion,
and only my close friends know I'm a nerd.

If you just saw me you would think I was just a jock,
but I hate sports.

Eh, well I'm sort of a history and an art nerd. And those two led me to the love of coins. SO I guess I'm a composite nerd.

But in all honesty no one by looking at me would think that I'm a numismatist. In fact, most dealers tend to refuse to believe that I am, and then they are amazed to see that I am actually quite knowledgable.
