Numismatic News - Collectors like the silver one-ounce 2017-P proof American Liberty medal that went on sale June 14. Or don't they? The answer depends on what you believe is a similar Mint product. As of June 18, the Mint said 33,075 were sold.

If you want to make that figure look bad, you will zero in on the one-ounce silver American Eagle proof coin results.

Buyers have taken 271,606 of the 2017 pieces and 560,648 of the 2016 coins. Now don't those numbers make the medal result look pathetic? Don't jump to a conclusion yet.

...but a pig created by the Mint totally by making it unlimited. The coin itself is fine...packaging is extreme

The recently referred to Kennedy Set had a limited mintage but one that was way up there and that is reflected by present value.

This one has no hope unless they suddenly make it " currently unavailable"

Coin should justify the purchase price...not the packaging. Definitely lipstick but not sure of the pig part

I have one and I love it. I think both the obverse and reverse designs are fantastic.

If you do not like the design, the unlimited mintage, or that it is "just a medal," then you do not have to buy it. It is that simple.

I think it's just another silver one ounce round (like the ASE except that's also 'legal tender'). But the Mint captures the markup, instead of the authorized purchasers.

I call BS. They are trying so hard with this design. And throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it with lackluster results. I bet they don't even cover marketing costs after expenses lol

I agree with jbuck. The design is pretty stunning, especially in person.

To each their own!

Yeah. The design isn't all that bad. For me though, it's that out of the dozen or so designs submitted 1 or 2 were absolutely stunning. *** Staff edit: Do not make this political *** an open mintage and it really turned me off to them.

While I did buy the 2017 silver medal, I still prefer the 2016 silver medal over the 2017.

I think this representation of Liberty is quite stunning but have to agree the number of initials in the field is very distracting.

Collect what You will, when and If You choose, a lot more than a simple decision, for many. :)

For some reason, these coins with the full headshot just don't appeal to me. Maybe if I had one in had to see, I'd change my mind.

I didn't buy one because it's a medal, not a coin...

Mine should arrive tomorrow graded PF69 in a NGC slab. At first I struggled with this medal.
But I kept being drawn back to it. So I paid the 65 bucks.
There is something other than those big stars that grabs me. I think that the Lady Liberty is just one absolutely beautiful sculpture. So realistic, it is almost a photograph. The eagle on the reverse is fantastic as well.
Yes the initials bother me a bit.

There are eagles and then there are egos.

I think the design is so nice, the initials almost go unnoticed despite them being badly placed.
Guess I'll just pretend they are other birds flying far off in the background.
