A few months ago, I went through series of coin rolls and came across this oddity. I do not even know what this is. I don't know if this got struck on heavy grease or it's been mushed. Now that's a keeper. Capped die? An expert will be along shortly.

If I were to slab an error coin anywhere, it would be ANACS.

I appreciate the feedback. I will have it sent through ANACS. I just uploaded several coins on my next post and feel free to either give me more feedback here about this coin or the coins on my new post.

As mentioned before it is struck through a die cap, not really worth getting slabbed. Also for me, if I were slabbing a major error, I would go PCGS, but for minor, ANACS would be my choice. I only like NGC for Ancients

Nice condition to boot for its age. Can see for sure pre 1993, but weight should confirm if its pre 1983 as it appears to be copper from one angle. As for 3rd party authentication it may or may not be necessary. I think it depends on your motive for having it done. This one falls into the obvious category. (adding) Buy the coin not the slab. If you are planning to sell right away, then calculate in if you'll be able to re-coop the 3rd party slabbing fees? If not worried about slabbing cost or just wanting to have authenticated and keep it safe for future generations then slabbing may be the way to go. Thanks, Doug.

with Halo1st. The only reason to get that coin slabbed is if you want to keep it safe for your own collection. I had a clipped cent slabbed and even with a group rate discount I ended up spending quite a bit on it. I can't remember how much -- except I do remember there was an extra fee ($17?) for error coins. I did it because I found that coin decades earlier, long before I was a collector and it has some sentimental value to me. Getting it slabbed was a way to keep it apart from the rest of the stuff I was buying. Anyway, I kind of remember paying about 5 times what it's worth just to keep it safe. I was new to collecting and didn't know that I could buy my own slabs or Air Tite holders.
