Thing is, it's easy to buy a problem coin, but usually very difficult to sell it.

Commems stated : " I have two examples of the Lafayette Dollar in my collection, one is an MS-63, the other is an MS-64; both were graded and encapsulated by PCGS. The two coins were struck from the same obverse die ("Obverse 1" of four), but two different dies were used for the reverses. The MS-64 coin is "Reverse B" (14 leaves, tip of lowest leaf between the "1" and "9" in "1900") and the MS-63 is "Reverse C" (14 leaves, tip of lowest leaf over the "9" in "1900"). The five known reverse dies are referred to as A, B, C, D and E. The "1-B" coin is the most common variety of Lafayette dollar; the "1-C" is considered scarce to rare. "

This my fellow commemorative collecting enthusiast is Exactly what I was thinking of, The 1C is the Scarce one.... Thanks for All you do, Commems.!!!

My examples are One raw and 1 Slabbed. I need to check and label my examples... I need to complete my spread sheets...

Commems, I am Super Stoked and energized reading Your Dies Knowledge used on this Commemorative, Very Impressive, Nice to see.

I wanted to Ask Another question about the 1900 Lafayette Dollar. I was directed to Your follow up reply to me about the Differing Reverses on this Exquisite Commemorative.

My following question arises from information you so Kindly shared . I see the Obverse You posted was as you stated, From the #1 Obverse. I also saw the post mentioned there Were ( 4 ) Obverses made and used on this Dollar, My question is Being there are 4 known Obverses, Are there any indications or Other small intricate differences, How Can one Know, subtle differences in Those Other Obverses. If you can....

Well Done on the Dies used topic.....

@Morgans Dad: I apologize for the delay in responding, I was taking a little bit of a breather for the holiday and was not diligent in looking for questions.

Rather than create something derivative from my various references, I quote from Q. David Bowers' Commemorative Coins of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia - a book I would definitely recommend!

Regarding the Lafayette varieties:

"Obverse 1: With a small point on the bust of Washington. The tip of Lafayette's bust is over the top of the L in DOLLAR. AT in STATES is cut high.

"Obverse 2: With left foot of the final A in AMERICA recut, and with the A in STATES high. Second S in STATES repunched (this is diagnostic).

"Obverse 3: With AT in STATES recut and the final S low. The letters F in OF and LAP A YETTE are broken from the lower tip of the crossbar and to the right base extension, and AMERICA is spaced as A ME RI C A. The period after OF is close to the A of AMERICA. The tip of Lafayette's vest falls to the right of the top of the first L in DOLLAR.

"Obverse 4: With C in AMERICA repunched at the inside top (this is diagnostic). With CA in AMERICA differently spaced from the obverses just described.

"Reverse A: With 14 long leaves and long stem. Tip of lowest leaf over 1 of 1900.

"Reverse B: With 14 shorter leaves and short stem. Tip of lowest leaf over space between 1 and 9 in 1900.

"Reverse C: With 14 medium leaves and short, bent stem. Tip of lowest leaf over 9 in 1900.

"Reverse D: With 15 long leaves and short, bent stem. Tip of lowest leaf over 9 in 1900.

"Reverse E: Tip of lowest leaf over space left of 1 in 1900."

Hope this helps!

In an auction setting, I'm probably waiting for a better example. My 1 example, is not a better grade but having acquired it from a friend makes it a keeper for me.
