Well for one thing the MM is too bold for all that wear on the reverse .

Agree the MM orientation is not correct.

I'm not an expert. The mint mint mark's orientation is slightly off.

This is a real one:

Here is the real one over the picture. Looks like it is in the same place and has the triangle inside the D.

Here is yours

The real one overlaid over yours. Its really close.

Some photo shop blending magic. Its really close.

This is one I would send to ANACS, it may be real.

Looking at Photo grade there are 4 different dies of the Mercury dime. Again this looks like one of the die states. I could be wrong but this one leaves enough questions that I'm just not sure if its counterfeit.

I sent the picture to my friend at the coin shop. His biggest concern was all the fresh scratches. This should be worn smooth all around the fresh scratches are a concern. He also recommended dipping the coin for a while in acetone, if the D was glued on it might just pop off.

From the dealer: "I get a few 16-D a year in and most are really easy to spot as fakes. If I can't tell in a few seconds I go to deeper checks, there have been a few that pass all the checks and I still felt funny, offered to grade and would buy if it came back authentic. Of the few that said sure no problem, only 1 came back NOT authentic, if the person said no and walked away, chances are it wasn't real, so no loss to me".

Thanks for all the great comments! At least I'm not totally senile yet as I'm fairly good with counterfeits but could not honestly figure this one either way. So I'm going to do as suggested and see what happens. I've only got a couple things for ANACS right now but will probably be stopping by the Timonium, MD coin show on Sunday and Geoff will be there for ANACS. I can drop off what I've got plus maybe I dig up a few more things between now and then. I'll update this thread when the results are in.

Its appeared the D mint was tooled in that area, the fresh scratches help to hid the flaws around it, to make it look evenly circulated damage.

I'd spend a little sending it in to a TPGS just to be sure.
