Hello,

I haven't been on this site in a few years but I'm getting back into the hobby and came across some things in my collection I thought may be worth a second look.

I made a purchase of some Wheat penny rolls online many years back and know them to be genuine as I've opened one at random and found them all to be BU 1935 pennies. I have three rolls from the San Francisco mint and one roll from the Denver mint. Considering the top grades of red San Francisco mint 1935 wheat pennies go for quite a lot I was wondering how one would go about picking out the best ones?

I have little experience in actual grading (none really) and didn't want to unnecessarily crack the rolls. Would one send the entire roll off to the grading company? Please note, the roll I did crack was an SF mint roll. They have browned a bit since opening them many years ago, but are also in a tube. I could open those and share pictures if this gets any attention. I truly don't know how to proceed. Help, please.

Thank you,
CoinAdvocate

I clicked on this thread because I had never heard of a 1935 S/D...lol
S/D indicates an OMM (Over Mint Mark)

Maybe 1935 S & D in the title instead...?
As far as grading goes...I guess it depends on what you want to do with them?

I would not send them all in right now Red Book has a35 s at MS63 at 17$ valve all though Red Book isn't the best source of value . But somewhat in the ball park . The coin would have to be in much better condition than MS63 to pay for its self they minted 38702000 of the 35s .

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies I opened one up many years ago and they were all 1935S (one side of that coin was flipped onto the obverse and was able to be seen before opening). I guess I've just worked under that general assumption for the other three rolls as they look similar. One does have a cap that is 1935S on both ends, the other two are capped on both ends with the wheat reverse. For the two rolls that are capped on both ends with wheat reverses the rolls are marked with "Los Angeles branch federal reserve bank of San Francisco" and "Denver branch federal reserve bank".

Now let's say theoretically that the roll is full of 1935-S BU pennies that have never touched human hands, yes? What are the odds of getting higher grades out of that? MS-65 or higher? Are we talking about pretty low odds or something that may be reasonably possible?

Attached is also a picture of the pennies from the roll I did open many years back. They have lost some of their luster since opening, unfortunately, but they are all 1935S. I apologize for the low quality of this image, I was having trouble getting the lighting right.

If you guys would like any more information or pictures, please let me know thanks ahead of time for all your help.

Thanks,
CoinAdvocate

Nice job on storing those rolls!

The 35S roll is more valuable. The 35D's are worth about half as much.

You'd need to find at least an MS-66 35S to make it worth slabbing. Sending an entire roll in would be suicide on your wallet. Most OBW rolls contain primarily MS60-64 coins. Pick out the best 3 coins from the rolls and post them for us to grade.

Hey,

Apologies for the weird reply time, I work late. If I were to crack one of the SF rolls open, other than it being obviously irreversible, could I still keep them in good condition if I sealed them back up? What consequences am I looking at (if any) if I open these up? (Other than the personal feeling of loss). Is it more advisable to sit on them or to pounce at the chance of an MS65 or higher?

Thanks,

i'd pick out the best 3 or 4 coins in the lot. post straight on photos of both sides here. avoid direct overhead lighting.

I'll bet almost everyone would be MS63 with a couple 64's, maybe 1 or 2- 65 and the chances of a 66 are fairly slim

Hey,

I will do this tonight at work for the open roll if it's a slow night. Hopefully my phone camera is good enough on this S23+.

Stay tuned,

One definitely stands above the rest, there are two that come close but this one is a dream. Unfortunately I can't get these pictures to stay at a decent quality and still be under 300kb, that's just not easy... Any suggestions? They're roughly 3.5mb in size each.

Thanks,

Figured it out, does this little black spot on the reverse next to the T of Cent effect the grade much?

Please grade and critique my camera shots:

Not horrible, 63RD, maybe 64 if it has nice, cartwheel luster - hard to tell from photos.

I'd say MS-64RD. Those few carbon spots on the reverse may not affect the technical grade, but they will definitely affect the value. It seems unlikely that you'll find one nice enough to warrant grading. They have a premium in the original federal reserve bank rolls, so I would lean against opening the other rolls (depending on whether you plan to keep them or sell them).

at best MS64RD. I agree don't open any more rolls. you are going to find the same results. its just typical in bank rolls.

I'd open all of 'em. But that's just me. I wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.

Note: can you do a close-up of the "S" mint mark on the coin pictured here?
