My father in law passed away and I inherited a metric crapton of coins. I have gone through the silver dollar so far, here is what I have:

125 Morgan dollars (dated 1878 - 1921 D)
49 Peace dollars (dated 1922 - 1935)
53 Eisenhower dollars

These were stored in coin wraps for decades and never touched. Many of these, when I look under a magnifying glass, appear to be AU quality according to online guides. I'm not an expert, but I have a good eye.
I'm looking for advice. Do I go to a local coin shop and see what they will offer and risk someone trying to take me, or do I need an official valuation before I look to sell them?

I still have half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies to go through.

Quite the challenge, could be fun. Suggest posting a few photos--full, large and sharp--of two or three of the dollars you feel are the best. Do keep an eye out for Carson City minted Morgans.

Others will be along here to weigh in.

to the CCF, Buckeye4ever! That's quite a hoard you've inherited. Assume that the LCS will offer you 50% of the value of your coins. Before going there you should find out what you have. I would start by cataloguing all of the coins and entering them in a spreadsheet. You should get a copy of the Red Book and determine a ball-park value for your coins (go with lower values). This is something that you should not rush through.

Thank you both for your thoughts. I've actually started an Excel spreadsheet and have all the silver dollars entered based on year, and estimated grade. I just wasn't sure if it was worth investing in grading them or just taking them to a reputable dealer. I understand I'm not going to get actual value, but resale value. I'll see if I can figure out how to add some pics.

First of all, sorry for your loss.

That is quite the hoard & I would love to see each & every coin you mentioned. Some Morgans, even in low grades, could potentially be valuable. As inj1944 mentioned, Carson City Morgans are desirable & particular VAM's can add value. If any of the coins are off-center, partial collar, rotated dies, etc, those too would also add to the desirability factor.

If these were my coins, I'd study/learn as much as I could before attempting to sell.

I'm going back and forth on work/bridge calls today, so I doubt I'll have a chance to post many pics. That was one I had saved on my phone as an example. I have 28 1921 dollars I estimated at that grade. I'll try to get pics of the older ones and post them.
Really just wondering if it's worth getting them professionally valued to prevent a retail store from trying to lowball me if I sell them.

As someone new to coins and just going off of what I could see for grading based on internet sites, I had it as somewhere between Choice Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated. But I am completely untrained and had no good knowledge base to start from in grading.

Sorry for your loss!

Two things immediately come to mind. First, get a pair of cotton inspection gloves. You don't want fingerprints detracting from the coin values. Second, do not clean any coins. Don't rub them, soak them, polish them—keep them exactly as they are.

You are doing the right thing by creating a spreadsheet of dates and mint marks. The folks on this forum were wonderful in helping me to analyze a coin box for potentially valuable coins.

If you take them to a coin shop, just understand that you might get an offer based on melt value, or an offer based on date/mm/condition. Rare varieties can be way more valuable, but a coin dealer will almost certainly buy at a big discount to the ordinary price, and then pocket the difference. Take your time, use this forum, get the help of folks who really know their stuff. Don't be in a hurry to liquidate.

Carson city mint and 1893 S are some keydates to look for, don't clean and don't rush, better to get a grip on what you have before you decide to sell anything.

Thank you for the advice. I already had read not to clean them as that would devalue them. I'll get the gloves for handling.
Here's pics of the 4 oldest:

@Buckeye.... I think your grade is low on the '21, IMO in my eyes, mid MS.

& if you could, please supply a closeup pic of the tail feathers on the '78. Thanks.
