Today's coin was only a 2 year mintage. There is no interesting story on this one. 20 centavos were minted from 1913 to 1925 and then they disappeared until 1942. The coin itself has a pretty nice die crack on the reverse. Issuer: Portugal Period: First Republic (1910-1926) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1924-1925 Value: 20 Centavos (0.20 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Bronze Weight: 4.81 g Diameter: 24 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Medal alignment #8593;#8593; Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 574 Mintage: 10,580,000

I actually used these. Back in the 70's one could get hard candy for 10 centavos or less. Today's Coin: Issuer: Portugal Period: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1942-1969 Value: 10 Centavos (0.1 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Bronze Weight: 1.99 g Diameter: 17.5 mm Thickness: 1.12 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment #8593;#8595; Demonetized: 01-01-1982 References: KM# 583 Mintage: 14,980,000

Like the silver coins of the US, the silver coins of Portugal also were pulled from circulation. I had saved 3 of the below while I was in Portugal and found a nice MS one in a local coin shop. I gave a way 2 of these to a fellow collector so I only have 3 left. Today you get one that I pulled from Circulation. Issuer : Portugal Period: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1932-1951 Value: 2.50 Escudos (2.5 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.650) Weight: 3.5 g Diameter: 20.5 mm Thickness: 1.4 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Medal alignment #8593;#8593; Demonetized: 1969 References: KM# 580 1943 Mintage: 8,302,000

When Portugal changed from the Rei (real) to the Escudo, The escudo's value was initially set at 675$00 = 1 kg of gold. After 1914, the value of the escudo fell, being fixed in 1928 at 108$25 to the Pound Sterling. The first escudo coins (1910-1916) were large USD silver dollar sized, but with the economic conditions poor, the Escudo was quickly changed to non precious metal. The first release was in Aluminum/Bronze but then went to copper/nickel. This is my only Aluminum/Bronze coin. Issuer: Portugal Period: First Republic (1910-1926) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1924-1926 Value: 1 Escudo (1 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Aluminum-bronze Weight: 8 g Diameter: 26.8 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Medal alignment #8593;#8593; Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 576 Mintage: 7,716,000

In the 1920's due to WWI and the Spanish Flu coupled with just a badly run economy, metal for coinage was in short supply. Like in the US during WWII, the Portuguese Mint tried different metals and even paper fractional currency. What this resulted in was coins made of Copper/Nickel, Bronze, Silver, Iron and aluminum. Today's coin is one of the short lived Copper/Nickel series (1920-1921). Issuer: Portugal Period: First Republic (1910-1926) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1920-1921 Value: 10 Centavos (0.1 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Copper-nickel Weight: 3 g Diameter: 19 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment #8593;#8595; Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 570 Mintage: 1,120,000 As this thread has been getting a few views, I'm going to take pictures of the modern coins and include them in the thread. Should add about a week :)

Today, we are not posting an escudo, but a Real (Rei). These were issued in several form from (1415 to 1910): Real branco (1415-1517) Real (hammered coinage, 1517-1678) Real (mechanical coinage, 1678-1835) Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) This coin is from 1867 and is 5 Reis. Based on an exchange rate of 1000 Reis to the Escudo, this was 1/200 of an Escudo or comparable to the 1/2 US Cent. Issuer: Portugal King: Luís I (1861-1889) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1867-1879 Value: 5 Reis (5) Currency: Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) Composition: Copper Weight: 6.30 g Diameter: 27 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 513, Gomes# L1 02 Mintage (1867): 737,000

Continuing with Reis, today we have the last of the reis before the start of the First Republic in 1910. By the 1900's the Portuguese populace was done with the monarchy. The economic condition had deteriorated the value of the Real (reis) so much that a 1000 reis was in effect the currency of the masses. When we get to the 1 Escudo from 1910, I will talk about the overthrow of the monarchy, but for today, you get a 100 reis from 1900. I like this one more than the other reis of the time as the others had a likeness of the king and like the current US money, old men on coins is just not very pleasing. Issuer: Portugal King: Carlos I (1889-1908) Type: Standard circulation coin Year: 1900 Value: 100 Réis (100) Currency: Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) Composition: Copper-nickel Weight: 4 g Diameter: 23 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: 1911 References: KM# 546, Gomes# C1 07,01 Mintage: 16,000,000 This is one I have a duplicate.
