Extremely worn 1949 NZ Crown (Mintage 200k - meant as a commem rather than circulation coin).

This coin may have value, because examples this worn are extremely rare.

A big house fire in 1951 saw the owners coin collection fried smokehouse grill style, here are the survivors.

Rumour has it that one of these was used as a fire dog.

I will have my crown to go with fries please!

1827 shilling (mintage 524,000):

Not sure if these were shipped out to Australia along with the 1827 pennies!

Apart from that hole, that coin would be a decent example. Full Fair easily.

Many worn coins were shipped out to both Australia and New Zealand, you find worn and beaten up coins from 1816 onwards here. Last year was a story about a metal detectorist who found an 1817 6d and he thought it was worth thousands and was shocked to find it was worth around $10.

Even when the HMS Elingamite sank in the Far North in 1902, most of the coins on it were dated from 1890 to 1900 and were between F and gVF condition, only a scattering of half sovereigns were new and Australian.

The British did not ship "A" grade coins to colonies until much later. We got floor scrapings basically.

Wow, where are you guys finding this stuff?

Coins get that battered in Australia, most of them look VF/EF but just really grubby like they have been buried or left in the water for a couple years.
