To keep January1may company, here is a 1681-IH albus of Hesse-Cassel, commendably crude in its manner yet still somehow charming. 1 Albus = 12 Heller = 1/30 Thaler. That sounds like it calls for "crude yet charming" coins, not hopelessly corroded ones. Let me check... oh, right, this would probably count.  Nurnberg pfennig, ca. mid-15th century; perhaps Kellner 118, 1465-67. Uniface (there's nothing on the other side, thus no photo). |

This 1840-FS copper 3 Pfenning of Mecklenburg-Wismar is from the 19th century, but looks like it could be from the 17th century what with the retrograde N in MONETA, the bar above the N in PFENING to indicate a doubled-consonant, and the date itself which looks like it was hacked into the die by a 6 year old just learning how to print. I can lower the average a bit as well with this 1763-1767 - you can't exactly date it - IK 1/12 Thaler of Münster. Jacob Kohlhaas - mintmaster - might have been a bit shocked to see the work product of his design in such a sad state; or maybe overjoyed that it was being circulated so often! A 1785 20 Kreuzer of Bavaria that's also been through more than a few hands... A popular design but not exceedingly scarce.
