Dr Sreedhar garu,

superb and informative posts on the Bahmani and Mughal coins.Have you got any coins of the sultanate of Madurai & Vijayanagar empire for the period of 1330-1380? The sultanate of madurai was terminated most probably in 1350's,its last vestiges going out in another campaign in 1370's.

I am doing research on the Vijayanagar campaign against the Madurai sultanate.I am trying to cover all possible angles ie environment, tactics, order of battle, economic conditions etc.Would you be able to help me with some information as regards the numismatic angle?

I read that there is a break of 20 years ( circa 1356 to 1370's) in the coins of the Madurai sultanate.Have you got any information on coins in the intervening period?

Was there any debasement of coinage for either of the three main competing powers in this period ( Vijayanagar,Bahmanis and Madurai sultanate)? If there was what significance would it have to a numismatics expert?

Would you or someone you know be able to provide me with photographs of the coins of Vijayanagar, madurai and bahmani sultantes. It would be a great help to me.all credits will be gratefully acknowledged as and when my book is published.

lot of questions, but I am a novice in numismatics.many thanks

Dear Sriyogipublications,
Please go to the link http://goccf.com/t/93868 for images of Madurai Sultanate coins.

I can give you some information on Madurai sultans

There were eight sultans. Approximate period of rule of each (in AD)
1.Jalal ud din Ahsan Shah - 1333-1339
2.Ala ud din Udauji shah - 1339-1340
3.Qutb ud din Firoz shah - 1340
4.Giyaz ud din Muhammad Damghan-1340-1344
5.Nasir ud din Mahmud Damghan - 1344-1356
6.Adl shah - 1356-1359
7.Fakhr ud din Mubarak shah - 1359-1368
8.Ala ud din Sikandar shah - 1368-1377

Jalal ud din Ahsan Shah - He was governor to Muhammad bin Tughlak of Delhi. In 1333.AD, he declared independence and became the first sultan of Madurai. He was killed by one of his officers in 1339.

Ala ud din Udauji shah - His rule after assassinating Ahasan shah lasted for about a year when he too got murdered.

Qutb ud din Firoz shah - He followed Udauji, but was killed by a stray arrow in about one month.

Giyaz ud din Muhammad Damghan - He was an army man in Delhi. He married a daughter of Ahasan shah and thus claimed his right to the throne. His period is documented by Ibn Batuta. He is known as a cruel ruler. He captured the Hoysala king Vira Ballala, killed him and hung his body on the walls of the fort at Madurai.

Nasir ud din Mahmud Damghan - He came to Madurai from Delhi when his uncle Giyaz ud din Muhammad Damghan became the ruler of Madurai. Coins during his reign are rare though his period appears a long one of twelve years. This is said to be due to constant attacks of Kumara Kampana, son of Bukka raya of Vijayanagara empire. The hypothesis claims that Damghan lost and regained the throne quite a few times during this reign and that contributed to very less coins being in circulation.

Adl shah,Fakhr ud din Mubarak shah and Ala ud din Sikandar shah - These three rulers have nothing to their credit. In 1377.AD, Bukka of Vijayanagar annexed Madurai to Vijayanagara and thus the sultanate came to a close.

This is all I could gather for you. Hope this will help.

You can use any of the photographs I have posted here for your research needs. I will inform if somebody else can provide more images.

If you come across interesting history of this period, please share. Thank you.
