Hi all, is this a restrike or a fake?

AFK ... it would help to weigh the coin, measure it's diameter & thickness, test it with a magnet, & post your results ...
...& as I've been often reminded ... handle your coins with gloves, as the oil from your skin can deteriorate & significantly reduce the value of a coin ...

A photo of the edge would also be helpful.

At that age and condition handling that coin without gloves will not do anything to it

If the weight is correct, and the edge looks normal, I'd assume it's a restrike. There's no premium for counterfeiting a high-quality fake Maria Theresa restrike thaler, as they're just bullion coins.

I think many of the telltale markers to help identify which mint and time-period this coin may have been struck, have been worn away.

I agree with Sap. Very worn. The tall cross in the small shield in the middle of the reverse makes me think it's from Vienna Mint, and the saltire X after the date makes me think late 19th century. Without seeing details from the edge I can't be much more help. I love the splendid die crack at "CO TYR"!

Just wanted to add that MTT's were, in fact, counterfeited. I've seen a couple of crudely cast copies in silver-washed pewter that likely date from the 1910-1920 range and are almost certainly of African origin.

There are websites that can help you attribute these coins based on things like the number of pearls in the diadem, the lines in the shields, etc.

If you google Hafner Taler Database one of the first answers you'll get will be Theresia Name. If you click on that you'll find it's a really comprehensive printable database. It's a bit old now but still very good. It's quite complex so read the first part thoroughly before diving in. You will be amazed at the varieties! Have fun!
