Hi, m8s!

My question is about the nail mark on reverse. Is it a variety or a casting defect? I can't find this variety at Hartill. Unfortunately I have no more literature for ancient Chinese coins.

This coin is:

1 Cash - Huang Song tong bao - ND (1039-54) - The Northern Song Dynasty - Emperor Ren Zong
Reference Hartill# 16.94

Bronze
Diameter 25 mm
Weight 3 g

It looks like my coin is not the only one. Here is one more coin with the same nail mark.

Strange why Hartill haven't mentioned this variety in his book

According to Norman F. Gorny (2016, p.5):

Another mark, though it is often erroneously called a crescent, is the nail mark, #30002;#25991; ji#257;wén. This looks like the mark of an actual finger nail. Nail marks are probably a type of control mark, but their appearance is sporadic and inconsistent and does not have varietal significance. Do not confuse the nail mark with the crescent.

I had to look on page 5 to refresh my memory of nail marks compared to crescents and other marks.
So when a dealer I know had coins with nail marks I agreed to buy them for the photo album.
I do wonder if nail marks are human fingers or just sloppy crescents?
Why or how are they there?
'Poda have a crescent so some worker stuck his nail in instead?

I have measured on several coins and looks like really the human nail was used to make these nail marks :)
