I've had this coin for at least 40 years and have always wondered what it might be. From my research, it's possibly an 8 reales coin from Mexico but as you can see it's badly worn. I found it in this same condition in an antique desk my parents bought in the early 80s. I've learned these can potentially contain gold but they are often counterfeited. Diameter is 26.6mm and thickness is 1.3mm. Any thoughts?

.... it is an early, First Republic of Mexico "Cap & Rays" design, 2 reales ... well worn, it is slightly smaller in diameter than the correct 28mm. it's full weight would have been 6.76 grams, but you would expect this one to weigh under that, probably around 6.2 - 6.4 grams ... it's silver purity (correct) is .903 ...

Thank you! And you're exactly right on the weight. Just dug out the scale and it's 6.2 grams. Can't believe I now know what it is after all these years!

@sourcream ... also of note on your coin: these coins circulated here in the USA legally through 1858, & continued to do so for years more. Their high silver content made them acceptable in trade. Some of the issues had enough gold in their mix to make it worthwhile to melt & separate the metals ...
...it would be interesting to know where you acquired this coin, &, if there is any known history behind it ... as worn as it is, I imagine it's seen a poker game or two, a few state fairs, & who knows what else ...
