Hello Fellow CCF!

I know people here is the right ones to ask for tips or help! :)

My cousin will get me mint Aussie notes without any difficulties from RBA in Sydney.

We are not sure how to get one of each circulation coins in mint or UNC condition without having to buy a coin set which I am not crazy about.

I told him about the wee shop in Sydney near historic district that is near to the money museum which is managed by either the mint or RBA. Remember, it was in 1991. It appears the museum is closed due to the renovations.

Is there any suggestions for my cousin to get uncirculated coins? Without having to break a bank, that is.

A$30 for a mint set is not something I am keen on buying especially when they are made of base metals. With apologies in advance!

The only reason for getting coins is that I understand that they have a new effigy of Her Majesty the Queen.

Hope someone could help us out. Before you ask me, my cousin is located in Sydney.

My cousin will go to RBA on Friday.

Kind regards,

Carrigna

Not much help I'm afraid,i had an Uncle that worked for the Reserve Bank(RBA) and they did not deal with the public so not sure where he is geting the Notes from.
Your best bet is to deal with the Mints direct,no Oz GST(10%) and subsidised post/shipping.

Without resorting to buying mint sets, the best strategy would be to
take from pocket change, any coin that from a cursory glance, seems to be in superior condition, and put them in a one liter jar or similar

Collect every nominally superior looking coin over a period of (say) six months. At the end of the period, take out two of the best examples of each different coin, and return the rest to circulation.

Unfortunately, the Royal Australian Mint bags all coins as they drop in a pile, after ejection from the coining press. Expect all coins to have bag marking Therefore, only take the lightest of bag marked coins for your collection.

I have have been doing this for about the last 5 years and have managed to build a type set of all denominations and designs, of all types issued since 1966. My Australian Decimal coin collection now numbers around 400 pieces of all Elizabeth 11 effigies denominations standard types and commemorative types.

All taken from circulation, at face value.

Perhaps your cousin could sent a package to the 'States once a year, of new finds taken at face value from circulation.

Perhaps you could do the same in return, with US coins.

The RBA doesn't deal in coins and the mint sends all (I think) new coins to security companies for rolling... so the only way to get new coins at face value is from change.
Depending on the time of year there might be a glut of new coins, or there might not. I'm in Queensland and am currently seeing a lot of new 5c and $2 coins but nothing for the other denominations.

The RBA used to have a banknote collector's counter, where collectors could obtain current crisp Unc notes. They no longer provide this service. The only way to get Unc notes for face value is to go to a regular bank and try to get lucky.

Mint sets are not a good source of "coins issued for circulation", since the sets are (a) made the previous year on special presses, and thus are not actually "circulation coins minted that year", (b) often contain coins not actually made for circulation, and (c) these days, there are many circulating commemorative coins issued each year that don't make it into the mint sets.

The RAM very rarely sell to the public any Unc coins for face value - there's always a considerable mark-up. The mint-your-own-coin $1 coins are sold for $3, and a 300% markup is a bargain these days. $30 for a mint set containing $3.85 face value of coins isn't too bad, comparably speaking.

Your only hope of buying a set of Unc coins that were actually issued for circulation, is from a dealer. Unfortunately, COVID has wreaked havoc with the Sydney dealer scene; I'm not sure which ones are still open.

The reason for this is, of course, that the RAM has followed standard business practice of modern minting corporations, by completely separating made-for-collector coin production from regular circulation coin production. The two product steams never mix.

Hi Sap, Mr T, SeI 69I and Basil!

I am delighted to see your replies and they are very helpful!

I must apologise for not replying sooner as it is my fault for not bookmarking this topic (subscribing, that is). Hope all of you accept my apology.

Indeed, you are correct that the coins are no longer offered at the RBA counter in that wee shop in Sydney. Must look for the plastic bag I have somewhere. Perhaps you can tell me what happened to it as I was in that shop back in 1991.

Fortunately, my cousin was able to exchange my old Aussie notes for new notes from RBA in person. Get this, they wouldn't let him exchange 10/- note and gave him a form. This is only LSD note I have.

I am so impressed with new polymer series! It makes me wondering if the first polymer series notes are still around in UNC? Or is it too late for me?

I got them on last Saturday after 3 months' wait!

My cousin also was able to send me three coins. I need to brush up on effigies on Aussie coins. 20 cent coin he got me is a beauty! Other coins are not UNC but close to it!

I think I would ask him again to send me other coins to complete the coin set. Postage is quite high. $13.50 but when converting it to my currency, not too bad.

Now I have subscribed to this topic. Meanwhile, when I was in Australia, I never saw Kiwi/British/Jamaican or other foreign coins having same size as Aussie coins in circulation. My cousin told me once he got 20 cent coin from Jamaica in change! That is quite a distance! Have anyone of you seen such coins?

Cheers!

Probably only the later ones now, though there are still plenty of early uncirculated $100 notes around.

I've had a few odds and ends turn up in change but New Zealand coins are the most frequent as the portraits are almost the same.
