The COVID pandemic prevented me and my long time friend from making our annual desert walkabout in 2021, so we're thrilled to have just now completed our 2022 hike. Writing to share some photos of the experience.

Hike location was Tonto Creek in the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Arizona. We planned an approximately 12 mile loop hike, being mindful that there are no trails; just steep canyons, rocks, trees and and a river to cross multiple times.

The hike was 6 days total length. Truck was parked at the 'end of the road' at 6800' elevation and the river was down a steep entrance canyon at about 6000' elevation.

After spending our initial night at truck camp (in the snow), posing for the traditional pre-hike photo. Myself, Rob and Aussie Shepard Chloe.

Taking a break during the approach hike into the canyon, heading for Tonto Creek. Frequent breaks are a requirement when the pack weighs about 65 pounds at this point!

First view of Tonto Creek - lovely. We paused for lunch here, and spent the remainder of the 6-day hike following the creek downslope making camps along the way.

Camp is not a very complicated item in this type of backpack. We need relatively flat ground, a safe place to build a fire and water nearby. Tonto Creek gurgling past us made the water part easy.

It snowed on us a few nights. Morning temps were usually mid-teens with the daily highs mid-50's. Hey - this is a winter hike right? Nothing like a cheery morning fire to get the cold day started.

One of the final views of Tonto Creek before we exited via a ex-fill canyon back to the plateau where we left the truck. That cold 35F water must be crossed 4 to 5 times a day to avoid the steep canyon walls, making drying boots at the evening fire a necessity.

All-in-all it was a grand winter walkabout. No serious injuries and a ton of memories to recharge our desert spirits. I'm looking forward to it again next year.

Now, I have bunch of CCF topics to catch up on.

It looks like you had a great time even the dog looks tired and you both came back in one piece. I'd need snows to try that up here. oh and great pics to prove it.

Thanks for sharing the photo's, I always enjoy reading about your trip each year.

Did you encounter any wildlife on the hike? Heard in that area there are mountain lions, black bears, mule deer, elk, white tail deer, bobcats, opossums, bald eagles and spotted owls.

We saw a couple of cow elk up on the 6800' elevation plateau during the hike out. Tonto Creek canyon itself is quite rugged to get into and traverse so I suspect the larger mammals prefer to avoid it.

No birds to be seen on this trip. Did see signs of deer and bears although no live sightings.

I strongly suspect that the creek itself contains trout, although we did not bring any fishing gear to prove this.

I'm presuming you boil or purify your water? I wish I could do a trip like that!

Great experience and thanks for sharing with us.

Really enjoyed "being along" on your trip.
Surprised though you don't augment your supplies with fresh trout.

Thanks all for the kind replies - our annual winter hike is an amazing way to recharge spirits, there is a lot to be gained from quiet solitude with some survival challenges supported by a life-long friend.

Absolutely correct - and it's imperative to avoid any/all small water born disease such as giardiasis. Thankfully technology has caught up with this requirement, we both have hand held water pumps that fit onto our water bottles that quickly filter out all contamination.

@Petespockets - you should check out my 2019 winter hike where we focused on trout on the upper Black River. We were not sure there were trout in this stretch of the Tonto Creek so we did not bring gear to catch them. Maybe next time!

Thanks for sharing the images! Looks like you had a great time! Congrats!

A software consultant I worked with years ago used do an annual hike on the Appalachian Trail. His wife would drop him off at one spot and then pick him up a week later at an agreed-to location. As you do, he looked forward to his hike every year!
