Ok, I'll toot my horn.
I got back into the hobby after a 30-year break, back about 2009.
I bought a used detector after swinging a brand-new $1,000 Whites unit with all the bells n whistles, and not having much luck.
My first year I found a Mercury dime or two with the Whites.
After switching to brand X, I went back to my (public) spots and dug around 70 old silvers and 500+ wheats the first year.
Second year, I dug an 1887 Morgan dollar, several halves including Barber, walkers and Franklin (of which I've found several but no silver Kennedys to this day). 'Bout 50 silvers the second year.
Third year, nice oldies such as Peace dollar in a ballfield, 1758 reale (Michigan farmyard) standing liberties, 2-cent pieces, lots of Indian cents, many more Barbers and walkers, etc...
Each year, less silvers and collectibles, as I clean out all my spots and hunt for new. I have detected private yards with luck, but some yards even 150+ y.o sometimes don't even produce a single coin. Many yards and parks have been detected way back, but they usually left goodies for future hunters.
All in all, couple hundred silvers, couple thousand wheats, dozens of 1800 era coins, I could go on and on, as there's too much to list.

My detecting buddy has done very well, he's more of a relic hunter but has dug a nice 1916 D Mercury dime in our hometown, he won't sell it to me though, I've asked, and offered a nice price.

When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
