I just received this nice brown 1925-D Lincoln Cent. The ebay seller didn't give it a grade. From his photos I thought it was either a high AU or perhaps a low grade MS.

The surfaces are smooth and there is just a hint of mint red remaining in the obverse legend in the ST of TRUST.

I took two photos of the obverse at different angles, then rotated. The light brown on Lincoln's jaw doesn't show itself when I look at the coin under magnification, so it's more an effect of the lighting.

Your thoughts? Thanks.

I'm at AU58--light circulation artifacts. Yes, a nice coin.

Lost all of it's mint luster, due to the acquisition of a nice, even patina.

Unfortunately, the patina has made it somewhat difficult to grade it accurately, and differentiate between weak strike and minor wear, from on screen pictures,
and thus a wide variation of grade opinions within this thread may result.

I am inclined to agree with ijn1944.

Thanks for the responses so far. I paid low AU money for it and am pleased with its appearance.

That's a BEAUTY! Well struck reverse for a 25D. Tough to grade slider. Is there any cartwheel luster/luster under the brown? I don't see any cartwheel spokes in the pictures which makes me lean toward AU. However, 25D's are not very lustrous out of the mint. Most of the 24D & 25D MS "red" coins I've seen aren't very pleasant with poor luster, often taking on a pinkish color, and having weaker strikes. What's really making me think MS on your coin is the rims and general lack of hits, stains or residues. Those rims are nearly flawless, on circ coins you can usually see some dings and signs of wear.

It still does have some luster when held and turned in the light, especially on the reverse, but it's not strong.

Thanks again for the replies. The grading thing is still hit and miss for me, especially on brown coins, even though I've been collecting for 55 years.

this is a really nice example. I like it a lot. consistent color and overall tone. I'm with BadThad on this one. I'm not seeing anything that would say this coin was circulated more than 1 day.

I'm at MS63BN only because of the small amount of luster remaining. but you sure can see it peaking out around the rims

on this one Paul

there is nothing on this coin to indicate that.
