The next coin I would like to share with you all from the large penny collection I purchased last fall is this 1919 one cent. This one is also red/brown in hand and unfortunately also has a small amount of verdigris starting to appear on the surfaces. The obverse isn't as well struck as the 1888 in my opinion.

Wow! What a nice collection that you bought. This is a nice AU with a little wear on the crown. Always check your 1919's for some neat MD on the Rev. You will see it start on the C in Canada and I have some that doubling can be seen all the way to the 2nd A in Canada with 4 letters involved and also up on the C in Cent. The planchet had gotten a little loose in the holder and the planchets then had movement R to left on the Rev moving 90 degrees to the right. Does your have a little on the C?

Agree, obverse is not well struck. I'll say AU-53.

Thank you! Interesting story on that. I was in the United States and stumbled on it at an antique store of all places. There were a bunch of US coins on display so I asked one of the workers (who I believe was the owner) if he had any Canadian coins. He pulled an old blue Whitman coin book (the one with the sliding plastic inserts) out of the safe. The lighting in the store wasn't the best, so I wasn't exactly sure what condition the coins were in. We haggled a bit on price over the course of two visits to the store (if memory serves me correct) and then I decided to think on it and left. My buddy (who isn't a coin collector) and I chatted about it for a bit and he convinced me to go back to the store and make the purchase. It turned out to be a complete collection of large cents from 1858 to 1920 and a few extras. The Whitman book wasn't in the best shape so I purchased a new coin book (which I will post about at a later date) from my local coin club and swapped the coins out.

Good to know!

I took a look with my loupe and there doesn't appear to be any MD. I think it might just be the lighting I used that's causing a bit of a reflection.

The pearls in the crown band are indistinct, and the bands on the orb surmounting the crown are also a bit indistinct

I hope it is not the best of strikes.
Reason:
If that is the case, it should grade much higher, perhaps
MS-63, or better

otherwise AU-55.

A very pleasing coin anyway , nice retained red.
