Yes, this is a bit of a rant, but I sent 10 coins in for grading. 4 of the coins came back with grades I cannot understand, including an 1878-s UNC PL morgan that they claim has an altered surface. And of course no explanation for the $180 they took to grade those 4 coins.

Not a new collector, btw....collecting for over 45 years.

I have had issues with them all along. I have 10 coins with them now and it is 30 business days and they still haven't been graded. pcgs is a good company and high value for coins to sell but they take forever. I sent in 9 modern economy and 1 error coin. They called and said I had to put them in two orders. Now when they ship back I pay 20 plus dollars to ship the one coin and 30 to ship the other 9 coins. They will not ship them back to me as 10 coins. Then the one coin is before 1965 so now I have to have the 9 coins under economy non -gold. The grading fee now goes up from 17 to 23 dollars a coin. Wow they got me coming and going on the price. Now day regular grading takes them 2 months. 45 days but that is business days.

Now I have been sending my coins to CAC grading. Boy oh boy they are tough on grading but when you get a coin done by them it is beautifully done. I am really happy with their grading and the website. Cheaper to get them graded and they took 10 days to grade my coins and then sent them back fast. Great company to go with. Did not take me too long to get a membership but was worth the wait. Good luck. Altered surface could mean the coin was cleaned.

I have issues with all the grading companies, but you have to take the good with the bad.Best thing is to learn to grade yourself.

There are questions that always go through my mind when little old me sends 10 coins to a grading company. My coins arrive one week ,then the following week The Oak Creek Collection sends in their coins and the following them The Spring Hill collection sends in some coins. Does the grading company say oh wow look who sent in more coins lets push them to the front. Some of these big name send coins in all the time so do they hold back my coins so the big names go first. This is an issue that has always crossed my mind. Makes me wonder.

I might have to reformulate my understanding of human nature if they did not.

My beef with PCGS is that they consistently grade the coins I submit too low, and the coins i"m interested in buying too high.

Not anymore. The "Interested?" link is dead and there are no PCGS opportunities on the Collectors.com site.

But note the date:

Now the archive doesn't always capture everything everytime, especially if there aren't links from the home page...
