In 2010, fans of Olympic hockey and the 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver, British Columbia, had three opportunities to add a $5.00 coin to their collection. The Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) produced three versions of a one-ounce, $5.00 silver coin that features a skating hockey player, a moment after shooting the puck - both design elements are depicted coming toward the viewer.

The coin was issued with a standard bullion finish, with selective gold plating on the maple leaves that flank the hockey player and with full gold plating; the latter two were sold to collectors directly by the Mint, the standard bullion coin was available through regular silver Maple Leaf bullion dealers. The selectively gold-plated version was part of a three piece set that sold for $199.95 CAD, and the fully gold-plated coin was sold individually for $71.95. I was intrigued by the Mint's many Vancouver Olympic coin offerings, but only purchased the three versions of the silver $5.00 hockey-themed coin for my personal collection.

Note: The R C M released the fully gold-plated version of the hockey-themed one-ounce $5 silver Vancouver Olympics coin In celebration of Canada winning the gold medal in Women's Hockey as well as Men's Hockey.

@commems.....

Excellent post as usual.

I too created my own "Olympic Hockey Set" from the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. I tracked down an additional wooden display case to display my creation. This set is one of my all time favorites.

I'm also displaying the original 2010 Special Edition Olympic Silver Coin set issued by the MINT and the Wooden display case as well.

Tender4848: Very nice! Thanks for posting!

I might consider getting an empty case for my three straight bullion coins for the Vancouver Olympics. It would make for a nice counter to my Special Edition SGP Set from the Mint. I'll have to check to see if they fit in the case while in their current capsules.

I have this set but since it was minted through the bullion side of the business... they all suffered from the dreaded Bullion Whitespot. OK for true bullion as all you expect is the PM value an aesthetic... a little disappointing when it comes in a premium set.

@vonigohcr

11 years later and the dreaded whitespot\milkspot has not found any of my Olympic coins and in particular these sets.....

Knocking on my wooden display cases hoping it stays that way

My Special Edition SGP set appears to be free of milk spots as well.
