I'm currently looking at a lot of over 500 Buffalo nickels. There's 7 old rolls and the rest loose. Out of the loose ones, what I can see dates in the 1920s with most in the 1930s There appears to be some nice nickels in the lot but the seller also says about 10% don't have readable dates. My problem is I don't know what an appropriate bid for the lot would be.

Here is a pic of the lot. I don't know how well you will be able to see them.

I would assume most are common dates from the 30's, but should be fun looking for varieties. Circulated, dated Buffalos were recently sold on ebay for about $20 to $30 per roll, if that helps.

I'm with Zurie. The dates I can see are in the '30s. They've probably been picked through. Hopefully not too many dateless in the rolls.

$250 would be the highest I'd bid on that lot.

Thanks for the info. Yes I would guess they are common dates but hoping there maybe some older ones in the rolls in decent condition. About $20 a roll would be my limit. I know some people go crazy for them so they could sell much higher.

It would be fun to look through those, but my price limit is much lower than most here. Priorities I guess.

Wholesale "buy" prices are as follows: full dates = 40 cents each; part dates = 18 cents each; no dates = 13 cents each and culls = 12 cents each.
Amazingly, I see no mintmarked coins in the picture. That tells you a lot.
Bid accordingly based on what you can see and the risks you are willing to take. With lots like this you never can tell what you are gonna get.

What I see is a great opportunity to learn about a specific coin ... if a guy could get these at a reasonable price, one could certainly look at every coin, dive into the varieties, key dates etc. By the end of that process, one would have quite a good handle on Buffalo nickels.

Without a doubt picked thru, personally I don't see the appeal. To each their own. Having said that, 40 cents a piece is the most I would pay, face value for no dates.
