Just like the title says.

I have had this coin for a while and bought it just for sake that is was an oddball. You can see the doubling in the legend across the front without magnification. It is so very worn so unfortunately much of the contrast is muted. I had always just thought it had some Machine Doubling on the legend and kept it for it's cool factor. Really didn't concern myself with its rarity or value beyond basically a G/VG 1857 FE

But now after scrutinizing it with a scope I am thinking there may be more to it....

Under the scope it has pronounced doubling across both it's obverse and reverse.

The coin is so very worn that I really just thought I would never know for sure....then after joining, I thought it might be a perfect example to share with the community and get some opinions on.

If it is a known variety or just some Machine Doubling.Or perhaps even a legitimate hub, or double strike.

I am horrible at picture taking so bear with me, I will try and take a few cleaner pics with the new camera if needed.

Across the top legend it is clear throughout as it looks shifted. Blurred at some points from the wear.

The obverse rim...

And on its reverse it continues, can be seen in the rim and in various details through the wreath and legend....

All along the rim on reverse.

What do you think?

I normally chock up these kinds of stretches as wishful thinking on the part of the coins owner. But on this coin I really can't commit to a concrete conclusion about it due to such wear.

I agree G4 obverse and bolder Machine Doubling. It's a very cool coin, even in a lower grade. This is definitely one to hold on to. Very nice find!

First, I have to say, not Longacre doubling.

Second, not a listed DDO.

Third, if it is machine/strike doubling it is certainly an extreme case.

Very interesting.

Hahaha so I am back to square one with.

I have put it back down as I am becoming biased when looking at it and it becomes counter productive to overstudy the coin.

Please keep the comments coming.

suggestion:

Take the coin out of the 2X2 first, then retake the pictures.

That may help.

Hmm...another option might be a worn die. The CuNi planchets were especially hard on dies.
I agree with the others, it would help to see more detail.
