GR58 Bedrock of the Community United States 11951 Posts	Posted 04/20/2023 1:48 pm In hand it does not look plated. Taking it to a coin club meeting tonight. I hope I will be able to take it up to Lansing next week to have the metal tested. So far everyone that has seen it in hand thinks it is 40%. Report this Post to the Staff

I read a Coin World article that said some planchets were sent from San Francisco to Denver in 1977 and some 40% ones must have been mixed in with the copper nickel ones. ANACS senior numismatist Michael Fahey said graders relied on the 40 percent silver 1971-D coin's specific gravity in making the silver-copper clad determination. The coin's specific gravity is 9.5, close to the standard 9.53 for silver-copper clad, with a weight of 11.44 grams, within tolerance of the U.S. Mint standard 11.5-gram planchet. Normal specific gravity for copper-nickel clad half is 8.92 and a coin's weight is 11.34 grams. 1977D (11.56g). Heritage's auctions are very interesting, I had checked them out yesterday. ——————————- Just to be clear . I understand to not get excited about a coin like this until it has been verified. The coin club meeting tonight was held at a local coin shop. Everyone agreed that it looks like a 40% half dollar. The owner of the coin shop wants me to take it to a big coin shop in Lansing, to have it checked out on their XRF ( I think that is what he said they have ).
