Any opinions

Looks like a 40% half dollar.
Weight 11.5g
No copper on edge
White on tissue test.
(Looks better in hand than my pictures show)

very unlikely to be 40% silver, of course, but to gather more evidence your next step would be XRF testing

Well the weight is 'spot on' for a 40% silver coin at 11.5g, but a clad coin weighs 11.3g so that is still within specs. Is it possible that this one has been plated?

In hand it does not look plated.

Taking it to a coin club meeting tonight.

I hope I will be able to take it up to Lansing next week to have the metal tested.

So far everyone that has seen it in hand thinks it is 40%.

If silver, would you guess the planchet is a left over from 1970 or a wayward planchet from 1976?

Being 1977, I suspect this.

A previous discussion for reference...

Thanks for the welcome back Jbuck.

I read a Coin World article that said some planchets were
sent from San Francisco to Denver in 1977 and some 40%
ones must have been mixed in with the copper nickel ones.

If this checks out I will send in into NGC.

I put up a link that was from heritage Auctions that sold one a few years ago.. for $6,600.00, the link is just above, if you missed it.

1971D and 1977D minted on silver blank by mistake 11.5g normal weight for silver, 11.34g for non silver but tolerance needs to be considered. ANACS senior numismatist Michael Fahey said graders relied on the 40 percent silver 1971-D coin's specific gravity in making the silver-copper clad determination. The coin's specific gravity is 9.5, close to the standard 9.53 for silver-copper clad, with a weight of 11.44 grams, within tolerance of the U.S. Mint standard 11.5-gram planchet. Normal specific gravity for copper-nickel clad half is 8.92 and a coin's weight is 11.34 grams.

1977D (11.56g). Error coin dealer Fred Weinberg believes that approximately a dozen examples of the silver-copper clad (40% silver) 1977-D Kennedy half dollars were known to exist before Wildes' discovery: https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...ver-planchet
1971-D: https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...-silver.html

Some info on specific gravity as its not generally discussed much but can be helpful when weight alone does not give all the answers. Most just would send to anacs as mentioned. https://coinsblog.ws/2016/06/detect...gravity.html

1976 S 90% silver put into special sets but might possibly show up in change weight will be 11.5g https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin...-silver/6728

Good information Datadragon. thanks

—————————

Dearborn . Heritage's auctions are very interesting, I had checked them out yesterday.

——————————-

Just to be clear . I understand to not get excited about a coin like this until it has been verified.

The coin club meeting tonight was held at a local coin shop.
Everyone agreed that it looks like a 40% half dollar.
The owner of the coin shop wants me to take it to a big
coin shop in Lansing, to have it checked out on their
XRF ( I think that is what he said they have ). The plan is
we are going there tomorrow morning.
