I have an 1885 Newfoundland 10 cent for grading. Just curious others opinions because it's a rarer coin. I have a really hard time finding values for Newfoundlands, so if you have an idea on what this coin might be worth, I would like to hear that too. Right now I just use coins and Canada site. Considering sending this one to PCGS
As always thanks for your insights!

Canadian Grading ( I will save you 60 bucks in grading fees)
Good 4 Details, scratch obverse .
Absolutely not worth grading in my opinion.
Also .a very hard coin to sell , scarce but hardly rare .
Cheers!

G-4, and not worth grading, in my opinion.

I'd say the reverse is a little higher - maybe VG, but agreed that the obverse is a G4 or maybe G6. Not worth grading though collectable enough. The 1885 5c is the rare one...

I'll say G-06, apparent obverse scratch might detail it.

Even the five cent in that nick would be a waste of grading fees .

@Pacificoin - agreed. There are very few Newfoundland coins where that would not be the case. I have an 1873H 5c in G6/VG8 and it's also ungraded.

My approximate cut off for getting things graded is a Trend value of ~$1,500. I adjust that up or down based on the intangibles that make Trend values unreliable with the key one being how nice it looks. It took me some time to get my head wrapped around the idea of "top-of-grade" vs "bottom-of-grade". Meaning that two coins could have the same grade but, due to eye appeal features, have surprisingly different values.

To approach the best way for getting Newfoundland
coins Graded, Here are a few really good money saving ideas.
As Silver said trend value of around 1K plus and pleasing
top of the grade semi key or key Date coins only .
Otherwise you are just making the Grading companies rich!
Low value or off Grade Newfy is very difficult to unload at best .

Yeah the more I look into it, the more I think I'll just leave them alone in their album. they have some fun toning going on but nothing individually worth 1k or more. I just had an Economy PCGS order with a turn around time of 30 days, so I was thinking while they weren't too busy, maybe I'd throw a few more 1800's us quarters in and throw an order of Newfies in the same box, but eh, not worth it. I'll concentrate on other coins that are worth it. Nice toning picture added for fun.

$1,000 or $1,500 is an awfully high value to use as a base value for grading coins. Personally if it is over $100 or so I used to be okay with sending to ICCS. For PCGS I typically try to be more like $300 before I send something in unless it is something needed to fill out a registry set. Whoever came up with those registry sets is a genius. Lol. I totally agree that spending $50 in grading fees for a $75 coin is pretty pointless but if it's worth at least a few hundred it can be worthwhile for sure. Obviously the higher the value, the more worthwhile. Sometimes though you just want a mid value coin protected in a slab with nice trueviews. :)
