Although I've been collecting uncirculated sets & clad proof sets going back to 1968, I first became aware of the Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets just last year. Except for the 2014 set, I've been able to pick up the 2012 through 2019 sets on ebay at issue price or less. I've since purchased the 2021 and 2022 sets directly from the Mint. Yes, the sets are overpriced for the coins being obtained but, for me, the packaging has made up for it, at least until the 2021 & 2022 sets that were downgraded from the previous years. That being said, I've quit purchasing the annual mint sets & clad proof sets and was intent on selling off my hoard until my son expressed an interest in taking them. In my opinion the Limited Edition Silver Proof Set, with its limited production of approximately 50,000 sets per year, has as much of a future as any other annual Mint product. Now if the Mint could just return to the packaging used from 2016 through 2019. |

I also have been collecting these sets I have them all from 2012 to current Minus the one the Mint didn't make (2015)

Let's be clear, the coins are not limited to 50k. It's just the packaging. If that's what does it for you, that's perfectly fine. I have 4 or 5 of the sets but stopped buying them a year or two before they changed out the packaging. Quote:

I think Dearborn hunts out empty older packing for cheap on ebay to move the '21 and '22 sets into; you might consider that.

Good luck on getting them to go back to quality packaging. I just emailed them the very suggestion two week's ago after ordering the sold out 2022 Liberty Silver Medal. I was simply checking out the website, scrolling the pages late at night and bang there it was available. Now if only the same happens with those Purple Heart dollars. But it lets me get what I need to keep my sets consistent, but for how long can I keep that up?

Estate sale, inheritance, theft, etc. The new owners don't have that high premium to deter them from parting out the set, so the coins get broken out for albums or individual sale, thus freeing up the packing for you to purchase on ebay.

A search on ebay for "US Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof set missing" resulted in three sets (two 2017 and one 2019) with the silver American Eagle missing. The seller of one of the partial 2017 sets has also listed a 2017 PR70 Eagle separately. A coincidence ? |

The 2017 LESPS set was special in that it contained an ASE that you could only get in that set and the Congratulations Set (the '17 S Proof). It's not really a surprise (to me, at least) that someone would crack it out and get it graded, especially if they are a collector of slabbed ASEs. The 2019 set, on the other hand... hmmm... not sure. |

Starting with 2012 and through 2014, the coins in Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets were encased together in sealed plastic packaging with the obverse of the dime, half dollar, and dollar displayed on the same side of the packaging as the reverse of each of the five quarters.  The nature of the sealed packaging prevents the coins from being rearranged, unlike the sets issued in 2016 and later. Currently, there is a 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof listed on e-bay that has all of the coins arranged in such a manner that the reverse of all eight coins are displayed on the same side of the packaging.  Did the Mint issue sets in 2012 with the coins displayed as such or is it possible that the sealed set was somehow "tampered" with after leaving the Mint ? |

I have the 2013 and 2014 LESPS and it never occurred to me that they could be opened without breaking the packaging.
