Polymer Substrate Fingerprinting

The IEEE engineering society a published a paper proposing fingerprinting high denomination UK notes - ALL of them. Each is unique & when matched with the serial number could be compared to a sample note to concur it's the real deal. 50 Pounds up so fingerprinted would take 100 GM of memory - doable.

I think the craziest part was that it would only take a terabyte of data to characterize every bill in circulation in the UK, that's shockingly low. All the country's bills fingerprints could sit in a single jump drive.

I wonder if they'll be able to streamline this process so its a quick photo scan of a bill in an app perhaps to instantly check legitimacy. I'm all for new steps in the anti-counterfeit process

I think the author of said newatlas.com article was less than thorough in his research prior to publication.

This tech has been a reality for at minimum 23 years. Reference and citation below.

Are you an IEEE member? Again, I am not so I can't view this reference. I wonder if it's referring to making a finger print database of each banknote as the later paper just published but rather making fingerprints(human)using TFT's? No mention of banknotes in the title, so thus my assumption, correct or not. Not sure if the IEEE would publish the same discovery twice 23 years apart.
We need an IEEE member to unravel this question.
