I noticed there was a discussion about Savoca coins some time ago and I registered here to notify you all of something worrying we found lately.

In short - two almost identical coins (suspected cast fakes) were sold by Savoca in November 2019. I asked them via e-mail about them and Savoca replied that according to their experts those coins are genuine.

Savoca Coins sells a huge volume of lower grade Greek and Roman coins via ebay with a generally minimal attribution attached to each one
When dealing in such large numbers of items mistakes are inevitable
But the difference it should be noted is not due to malicious intentions but to the economics of selling so many items that often sell for 5-10 euros each (or less)
I have returned a 'replica' to them and received a prompt refund
My opinion is that the mistakes are made by inexperienced assistants and not Claudia
She cannot possibly personally supervise the listing and sales of thousands of coins each month

I agree, though Savoca's response was "we think they are genuine" even though the coins are almost identical - flan's shape, cracks, irregularities... Coins are 99.9% fake, yet they don't want to admit it.
What's more worrying - I've found three ex-Savoca coins being sold right now on my regional auction. I notified the new seller and they agreed there's something wrong with those coins.

I'm far from saying that Savoca is a fraud and all their coins are fake because that would be an absurd. But it seems that people should be very cautious when buying from them and maybe should ask some other specialists to confirm the authenticity of any coins bought from them in the past.

Well, if the company is otherwise reputable and will refund if there is a fake, that is not so bad, but it still damages their reputation and they need to watch things better.

A lengthy read but very enlightening as regards to older forgeries, of which how many I wonder are in the marketplace even today, having gone undetected at the time and over the many years since they were made acquired "provenance" from passing through many collections.

I didn't see a caveat anywhere on his pages that he's selling repros and some of the prices sure are as if he's trying to deceive. I think he's trying to deceive --hence listing him.

He's added "Uncertain" to his sales vocabulary.
Not sure if that's better or worse.
Does 'unresearched' really fool anyone?
The only reason I can see for buying "UR" is that it's dirt cheap and you just want a copy of that coin..

The link to a comprehensive list of ebay sellers of fakes posted on page 3 of this thread would seem to be now defunct. Here is a viable & more up to date link for that information:
