I was about to clean my 1942 Liberty dime but after look at it through a loop I can see writing under the date and the 2 is a gold color. There's also black string stuck all over the coin which was no big deal until I noticed it was under the silver and coming up through the date. Looks to be some type of damage throughout the coin. Since I'm a novice at best I was wondering if I should clean with acetone like the 1939 I uploaded or leave it alone?

As long as you are using 100% pure acetone, I would conserve it. It would make it easier to see what really is there, and should not harm the coin at all.

It appears your coin has glue on it. So, yes, please do soak it in acetone so that may be removed.

Yes by all means give it a long soak in acetone . That 42 could wind up being a 42 over 1 over date .

Here's the results...I could only let it soak for a couples minutes and take a few quick pictures. Still many marks that don't match up with a typical 42 in my opinion. It's hard to see anything with these pics but when I look through a loop there's a raised number/letter between the 4&2

I'm not seeing anything unusual, although the acetone dip really helped.

Yeah It's pretty messed up but worth the effort had it been an over date .
