Looking to beef up my holdings of Indian Head cents. I've long enjoyed the design and have recently found some interest in assembling a date set. I have to admit that I was quite surprised when looking at the wide range of prices found in this set and feel that the difficulty in assembling a quality collection of IHC's may be underappreciated by many collectors. The cents in the late 1860's and the entirety of the 1870's appear to be quite a challenge and I will undoubtedly need to decrease my standards for the keys and semi-keys. Your thoughts? Below are two coins I recently acquired to begin this set. I'd like to have AU coins for most of the more affordable years, XF for the bit harder dates, and VF for the keys and semi-keys. 1875 1879 Edited by Joe2007 08/13/2018 8:43 pm

Underappreciated by me for sure. I only have a handful of then and the majority are in terrible condition. Nice challenge and great project. I would say you're off in the right direction with those first two! ! What album will you be using? Please keep us updated on your progress.

Do your research and learn to grade this coin. Rick Snow wrote a guide to flying eagle and Indian cents. Get it. It will help you you derstand the particulars of each coin in the set.

I don't have Snow's guide to varieties but the 1875 is definitely listable as a variety with those heavy abrasion lines on the obverse at the ear. Very nice !

Putting together a mid to upper circulated IHC collection can be quite challenging . When I began mine I started with all the common ones 1900-1909 in EF-40/45 . When I attempted to pursue the 70's it threw me for a loop . Long story short , good luck putting that set together .

Joe2007 , you should post pics of the 1875 in the classic varieties section of this site to see if you can get some info

New topic posted for the 1875. http://goccf.com/t/326385Thanks for all of the suggestions! They are much appreciated. This IHC journey may take time but I'd like to assemble a nice well matched set. Going to be at a coin show in a few weeks, will keep CCF posted.

A penny was a lot of money back in the 1800's, so they were used a lot (people didn't dump them in a jar at the end of the day) and took a beating, so here are a lot less nice ones out there, which drives the prices up. I tried to only save really good ones (AU or better) and my Dansco album is probably only about 1/3 complete, and I've been collecting a long time, but not spending a lot either yet... Trying to finish my 7070 first. Good luck with your search.

Good luck if you try to acquire a high grade set. Many, many of the lower graded ones are all over the place. As you go to higher grades they sort of vanish. Have fun with that 1877. So many minted of each year but so few around. Really used a lot back then. I only need the 1856 Flying Eagle cent to finish my set #1.

I put together a set in an old Library of Coins album. It took a long time and still is missing the 1877 and 1909-S. I don't think I'll ever spend the money for those two.
