These are seemingly impossible to do without someone's help here. How do you go about researching a coin like this on your own?

Japan 50 sen Heisei 2, 1990.

Legal tender in Japan for about 50 cents.

Japanese coins are my specialty, but it just takes time and patience - you'll eventually either learn the coins by sight, or have a good idea where to look!

There's a secret symbol on the coin that will enable you to be an expert immediately. The Chrysanthemum flower is the symbol of Japan, when you see that, you've nailed the origin.

Here it is again, on a banknote.

Wasn't the *sen* also a monetary unit in Indonesia? I have a paper note somewhere, and I thought that "satu sen" (one) was the denomination.

It's actually 50 yen, not 50 sen.
50 Sen disappeared a long time ago, as it was equal to half a yen.

The design is still a current design, and I have one in my pocket right now.

I second what Dnas stated. It is 50 yen coin and from Heisei 2 (1990).

Sen has been no longer valid for any transaction in Japan since 1954 (I think that was year) the Diet passed the law declaring that sen were no longer legal tender. Ever since that time, Japan has only these coins: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen coin in circulation.

It would be interesting to see if a new emperor will change coinage or not in Japan. The current emperor will retire from his throne next year. (Or is that in 2020?)
