Why is it that some nickles have a D beside the Monticello on the right side of the building and some do not?

Yes I am serious I have so many newer nickles that do not have any trace of the D and a few that do have this D.
I assume the D mint mark is on the front as some of my nickles have the D mint on the front. Sorry for a dumb question but I have no idea way so many have no trace of that D and a few have it?

Well found the answer myself never been looking at nickles just have been keeping them from change and rolling them for years. Yesterday I started to look at some under my microscope and noticed this. I found the answer but believe it or not not everyone is an expert on nickles sorry for asking.

I am sorry, with 1000 posts and being on CCF for over 10 years, I thought you had ran across that before. Mint marks on most coins migrate over design changes and other reasons.

To name a few:
The mint mark on Walking Liberty half dollar started on the obverse, but changed to the reverse during the second year.

Jefferson nickels were on the reverse like the one you showed, but changed to the front for the new Return to Monticello design. And they were over Monticello and large for war time nickels.

The mint marks moved to the front in 1968, just like they did for the dime, quarter and half dollar.

That's right. On the "Return to Monticello" nickels (2006-present) Felix Schlag's initials were added to the right of Monticello where the old mintmarks used to be (1938-42, 1946-64). 1965-67 were only Philly mint so, no mintmark.

Well, the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated the removal of the mint mark for up to five years. 1965-1967 The Special Mint Sets were struck in San Francisco. I can't find any reference to whether any coins were struck in Denver during that time, but with the coin shortage, I'd think that there were.

They were. Mintage figures for each mint and denomination for those years can be found in the Coin World Almanac. One interesting thing is that other than the SMS pieces struck in San Francisco, ALL of the 1967 halves were struck in Denver so if you have a 67 half even though it has no mintmark it is a Denver mint coin.
Rest in Peace

Just for 1967, in 1965 and 66 the business strikes were struck at both Denver and San Francisco so they can't be told apart. All of the SMS coins were struck in San Francisco.
