Maybe it's the background color but the planchet looks thick. The stars look a little strange as well...not symmetrical

It's thickness is the same as other nickels. I don't know what you see in the stars, but they are all symmetrical and point inward, as they should be.
Rest in Peace

$13 is a great price for the coin you received. It appears to be an above average strike from what I see. I do have to ask if that is a planchet flaw around Liberty's eye.

That's a great buy for $13. There is actually a small chance this is a circulated proof. The rim and stars look like it. I assuming a LCS would have caught that, however, so it's probably just a strong early strike business piece. You never know, though

I don't think proof coins would have such a prominent die crack on the reverse.

The '83's come hammered and close to prooflike. I think it's a business strike, mid-AU, not a bad coin for $13.

Yes, you're right, I missed that the first time. I have seen Shield nickel proofs with die cracks, but the V nickels usually had that figured out.

I am still giving it a small possibility for being a proof. The details and luster are possible on business strikes of this date, but look at those rims. I own certified V nickel proofs that looks less strong and powerful than this piece. That die crack though would be rare. I suppose it might have been just a very early strike and everything involved with the minting process went perfectly.

This is a great buy for $13. Easily worth double. If it were a proof, I would give you 150 for it.

None of the examples on CoinFacts have die cracks.
