Got $5 worth of pennies from a local credit union today, searched them all already and got a pretty decent haul! I found enough pre-1982 (thus 95% copper) pennies to fill a small plastic water cup. Also found about a dozen wheat pennies.
How easy is it to sell the copper ones? What about the wheat pennies? I am also a little confused about the value because I have read in other threads that the value of the copper is more than twice the face value of the pennies, but people talk about selling the wheat ones separately for 2 cents a piece or so... if that's the case wouldn't it be more profitable to just include them in a copper batch?

I had like $80 in copper pennies that I wasn't able to find a buyer for while within a week. You can sell them, but it's not easy to find the right person at the right price.

I think it would depend on how many 95% copper pennies you have for sale. I know I would be interested in 10 pounds of copper pennies over 6-8 ounces.

I usually sell $25 face on ebay (yes, I know, blech) occasionally. I usually get about $40 (plus shipping costs)

Ugh.. I was all about saving the pre 82's until I realized how much space they took up. So I ended up dumping them with my other jug of coins when I was low on cash one week. I didn't have THAT many but definitely over $15.
Im kind of iffy on the idea, if that's your hobby then go for it but for me, the time, space, energy it takes to separate, save & store. The hassle it is to find a buyer.

Well let me qualify a bit. I am not literally just searching for the sake of copper - that definitely would not be worth the time. What I am doing is searching for rare coins in the hopes that I might find some valuable ones (errors, rarities, etc.) While I am doing that, it makes sense to put aside any wheats or 95% copper ones if I can more than face value for them.

It the long run I think it is worth it to save the 95% copper and wheat pennies.
By the way, 12 wheats out of $5FV of pennies is pretty good. I'm lucky to find 1-2 wheats out of $5FV.

I did 2 boxes the other night, which is $50 in pennies, only ended up with about 13 wheaties, and roughly about 10% copper yield. I plan on doing $200 more this weekend.

Lots of people sell bulk wheats. I'm in such a market. I'm trying to make a date set (from 1909 to 33 is my main want list) but I also like having them around to give out. Throw a little something extra into trades and packages. You could do a commission based thing where you look for coins and dates for people.
Also look out for the high graded older coins!

when you say look out for the high graded older coins, any particular years? I have been saving anything older than 1980ish that is in very good shape (have a few interesting decent ones from the 60s and 70s) but I am assuming those will turn out to be not worth much and will end up going into the copper pile.

I sell 10000 copper pennies (100$) for 160 or 165 - not on ebay. I pull out and keep all the wheats, s mints, occasional IHC (5 this year), and bu coins for my kids sets. Craigslist is great for selling pennies I have a few thousand wheats. It's a lot of fun, but also a lot of work

When you make books do you try to get like every mint Mark of every year or just one of each year? I picked upa penny book from Barnes and Noble that has 90 slots I'm not really sure which 90 pennies to put in it lol...

I do every mint mark for certain years. Normally the books tell you what to put in, but if this one doesn't, just look at a list of every year through a certain date and put them in the book. Ex. 1941-1974

Got a 1946 wheat today that's in way better shape than the other wheats I have been coming across... here's a pic with another 1946 wheat that's in what I would consider to be standard condition for these, next to it... It actually looks much better in person, but I'm still trying to learn how to take proper pictures of coins... which is not as easy as it sounds lol.
